At Art Basel Miami, visitors can see an exhibit featuring six robot dogs designed to look like they’re made of flesh. These robots create physical artwork using artificial intelligence and imagery generated on the spot. Each robot has a remarkably realistic human head – the heads are modeled after famous figures like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, and the artist known as Beeple, who also created the installation.
The ‘Regular Animals’ project features life-sized robotic dogs that move around and occasionally pause to ‘drop’ a Polaroid-style photo from a back opening. While the photo is being created, a small light on each robot displays the message ‘POOP MODE’.
The art installation uses cameras around each robotic dog’s head to capture its surroundings. An AI then turns those images into unique prints that the robots ‘produce’. During the fair, the robots are expected to create over a thousand prints, including 256 special, verified digital versions called ‘Excrement Sample’.
Each print’s style matches the dog’s portrait. Prints of Picasso feature geometric shapes, while those of Zuckerberg look like a modern, digital image.
Temperaments, output speeds, and the artist behind the project
I’ve been following the development of these AI ‘dogs’ and it’s fascinating! Each one has its own personality, which the creators call a ‘temperament’. They’ve described Musk’s as a kind of core thinking pattern and Picasso’s as leaning towards the style that would later become Cubism. Plus, they all work at different speeds – Musk and Picasso are set to the fastest, which is pretty cool!
Digital artist Beeple, famous for selling a collection of 5,000 images as NFTs for $69.3 million in 2021, recently unveiled a new project called Regular Animals. As part of the installation at Art Basel, he showcased six robots, each reportedly sold for $100,000.
Beeple explained that his artwork is meant to make viewers think about being watched. He sees the piece as a reflection of how technology and online platforms increasingly control what information people encounter.
