Tom Cruise’s latest film, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, immediately became the most popular title on Paramount+. It’s almost certain any new Tom Cruise movie will top the streaming charts, and this installment of Mission: Impossible was no exception, quickly claiming the number one spot.
The film stars Tom Cruise, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Holt McCallany, Janet McTeer, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Tramell Tillman, Angela Bassett, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Charles Parnell, Mark Gatiss, Rolf Saxon, and Lucy Tulugarjuk. Christopher McQuarrie returned to direct Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, based on a script he co-wrote alongside Erik Jendresen. Read the official synopsis:
Following the events of the last film, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team are still tracking down the Entity, a dangerous artificial intelligence that has hacked into secure systems worldwide. With governments closing in, and secrets from Ethan’s past resurfacing, this new installment of the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE series delivers even more intense action and suspense.
As a huge fan of the Mission: Impossible series, I was really bummed to hear about how Dead Reckoning did at the box office. Everyone was hoping a fresh start with the next film – originally planned as Dead Reckoning Part Two – would turn things around. But unfortunately, even though it made $598 million worldwide, with a production cost somewhere between $300 and $400 million, it looks like Paramount is still facing a significant loss on the movie.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Redeems Itself on Streaming
Let me tell you, getting ‘The Final Reckoning’ made was a real rollercoaster. They initially intended to shoot it right after ‘Dead Reckoning,’ but plans completely changed in 2021. The whole movie went through a massive rewrite, and then, to make things even more complicated, production ran smack into the 2023 strikes. All those delays meant filming stretched on and on, and the budget just kept climbing – honestly, it was going up as fast as Tom Cruise was flying those planes for the stunts! It was a tough shoot, to say the least.
Okay, so the latest Mission: Impossible got pretty good reviews – critics were around 80%, but fans really liked it, giving it an 88%. It didn’t quite live up to some of the other films in the series, honestly. But here’s the interesting part: even though it didn’t kill it in theaters, it’s absolutely crushing it on streaming! It’s given a boost to all of Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible movies, actually. Right now, he completely dominates the U.S. streaming charts – he’s got the top four spots! Mission: Impossible and the second film are in second and fourth, with American Made snagging third. And, amazingly, Top Gun: Maverick is still hanging in there at number ten. It’s a total Cruise takeover!
While “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” suggested it would be Ethan Hunt’s last mission, a quick return for Tom Cruise as the character isn’t entirely out of the question. Given the popularity of the franchise, it’s hard to believe this is truly the end.
