Following some issues and a temporary return to early testing, Splitgate is getting a fresh start with a new name. At the PC Games Show, 1047 Games revealed that Splitgate 2 will launch as Splitgate: Arena Reloaded on December 17th. The game will feature significant changes to gameplay and how players progress, all designed to recapture the original fun of Splitgate.
Josh Watson, design director at 1047 Games, says they’re completely rebuilding Splitgate, keeping the best parts of both previous games and getting rid of what didn’t quite work. In a recent video, Watson explained that classic games like Unreal Tournament, Quake, and Halo heavily influenced Splitgate’s design.
The new version of Splitgate will go back to its roots with fast-paced, classic arena combat. This means removing the Factions and Abilities that were added in Splitgate 2. Along with this change, the game will have a reworked progression and ranking system, and items in the in-game store will be more affordable. Players previously complained about the high cost of items in Splitgate 2.
Splitgate: Arena Unloaded introduces a host of new content, including five brand new maps, six maps that have been completely redesigned, and three new main weapons. A powerful Railgun has also been added to the game. The developers at 1047 Games highlight that all these changes were made based on what players shared during public testing.
Last month, 1047 Games announced that the beta test for Splitgate 2 will end on December 4th, after which the game will temporarily shut down before being re-released. Like Splitgate 2, Splitgate: Arena Reloaded will be available to download and play for free on PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
Okay, so Splitgate 2 had a bit of a rollercoaster launch. It first came out as an open beta in May, then officially released in June. But things got messy pretty quickly. There was a lot of backlash after the developers wore a “Make FPS Great Again” hat at Summer Game Fest, plus players weren’t happy about the microtransactions. Then, to top it off, there were layoffs at the studio, and the game went back to being a beta in July. It’s been a weird situation, honestly.
