Will Smith might be returning to save the world once more in a new Men in Black movie. He famously played Agent J in the original 1997 blockbuster, which led to three successful sequels. While last year’s Men in Black International featured a new cast – including Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, and Liam Neeson – and did okay at the box office, it received mixed reviews. Now, Sony Pictures appears to be planning another installment with Smith reprising his role.
Sony has already successfully revived Will Smith’s older films, most notably the Bad Boys franchise, even during the pandemic. Now, they’re considering bringing back Men in Black, and it hinges on Smith’s willingness to participate. Deadline reports that Sony is working on a script by Chris Bremner, who wrote Bad Boys for Life, with the intention of offering Smith the first opportunity to star. While the size of his role is still uncertain, it’s unlikely they’d go to such lengths for a small part.
Sony hasn’t officially responded to the news, and Will Smith isn’t confirmed to return. While Men in Black International received mixed reviews and a 66% audience score, its $253 million worldwide earnings seem to have convinced Sony to consider another installment.

Will Smith’s career suffered after he slapped Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards. Several of his projects were paused or cancelled, and while he apologized, he’s only appeared in two films since then: Emancipation and Bad Boys: Ride or Die (which was already being filmed when the incident happened). His next role will be voicing a character in Ice Age: Boiling Point, scheduled for release in 2027.
Will Smith is likely to reprise his role in a second I Am Legend movie, which has been in the works for a while. He recently revealed some information about the film – also starring Michael B. Jordan – during an appearance on the REVOLT’s Drink Champs podcast.
We originally planned to make a prequel story. Then, Akiva Goldsman suggested something different: a new story based on an alternate ending where my character survives. In this version, Michael B. Jordan’s character leads a new settlement – he’s not my son, and this settlement is located in Connecticut.
We haven’t received any new information about the next film, and it’s unclear when filming will begin. Like several other projects Will Smith has been involved with recently, its future depends on navigating the unpredictable nature of the movie industry – we’ll just have to wait and see if it happens.
