Be warned, major spoilers follow for Stranger Things season 5, Volume 1, especially the ending of episode 4! A recently released video from the full cast table read highlights a pivotal and emotional moment for Will Byers. After a three-year wait, the popular Netflix series returned in November, and the first four episodes culminated in Noah Schnapp’s character, Will Byers, becoming the hero by tapping into the powers of Vecna (played by Jamie Campbell Bower).
The official Stranger Things YouTube channel recently shared a behind-the-scenes look at the cast’s reaction to discovering Will’s powers during the episode’s first read-through. You can watch it here:
I was watching the behind-the-scenes footage, and it was so cool! Matt Duffer – one of the creators, along with his brother Ross – was reading the scene descriptions as the cast – Noah Schnapp, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, and even Linda Hamilton – reacted to the reveal. When the episode reached its big, dramatic ending, the whole room just exploded with cheers and applause. It was a really fun moment to witness!
After playing a smaller role in seasons three and four, Noah Schnapp’s character, Will, will be a central focus in the fifth season of Stranger Things. The show has hinted for a long time that Will has a connection to the Upside Down and the Mind Flayer, but so far, that connection has only been shown through him experiencing chills.
Seeing Will bleed from his nose really threw me – it immediately made me think of Eleven! But the Duffer brothers actually explained to Variety that Will doesn’t really have powers of his own. It turns out he’s somehow connected to Vecna and is just… feeling what Vecna is doing. Ross Duffer clarified it all, and it’s a pretty wild connection. It definitely feels like this is setting him up for something big in the rest of the season, though!
What makes this situation unique is that he can actually use Vecna’s abilities. However, everyone involved is connected. Eleven and Vecna share similar powers, but this person doesn’t generate the powers himself. He’s essentially acting as a conduit, channeling Vecna’s abilities and controlling them like a puppet.
Will uses his abilities to defeat the Demogorgons and protect his friends, but the reappearance of Vecna at the end of the episode makes it clear the danger isn’t over. Vecna reveals his plan to remake the world, and surprisingly, he decides to spare Will’s life before retreating back to the Upside Down.
The brutal attack on the military at the MAC-Z in the first part of Stranger Things season 5 showed that ordinary weapons can’t harm Vecna. While Eleven’s powers were previously his biggest weakness, it’s now becoming clear that Will will be a key player as the situation worsens in Hawkins.
We’ll find out how the story of Stranger Things ends soon! Will is back in action, and Netflix viewers can watch the final part of the story on December 25th, with the very last episode arriving on December 31st.
