First Teaser for ‘The ‘Burbs’ Reveals Remake of a Tom Hanks Cult Classic

Peacock has released a first look at its remake of the classic Tom Hanks film, The ‘Burbs. The series is being produced by Seth MacFarlane, known for Family Guy and Ted, and Brian Grazer, who has worked on shows like Arrested Development and Empire. Emmy winner Keke Palmer leads the cast, following recent roles in films with Eddie Murphy (The Pickup) and Keanu Reeves (Good Fortune). Jack Whitehall, Julia Duffy, Paula Pell, Mark Proksch, and Kapil Talwalkar also star in this horror-comedy remake.

The original 1989 film, The ‘Burbs, directed by Joe Dante and starring Tom Hanks and Carrie Fisher, follows a suburban dad who gets caught up in a strange mystery involving his new neighbors, teaming up with a quirky group to investigate. The new Peacock remake features a young couple (Palmer and Whitehall) who return to the husband’s hometown, only to find themselves entangled in long-held secrets and danger when new residents arrive. Here’s what Peacock says about the remake:

Inspired by the 1989 movie of the same name, The ‘Burbs is a modern story about a couple who move back to the husband’s hometown. Their peaceful life is disrupted when a mysterious new neighbor arrives, stirring up secrets and bringing danger to their quiet suburban street.

Peacock released a first look at the upcoming series The ‘Burbs on YouTube. The trailer shows David Palmer taking on the role originally played by Tom Hanks, alongside a quirky cast of neighbors. Created by Celeste Hughey, whose previous work includes Palm Royale and Dead to Me, the series is based on Hanks’ movie but promises a fresh take on the story of overly curious neighbors. All eight episodes of The ‘Burbs will premiere on Peacock on February 8th.

Seth MacFarlane’s ‘The ‘Burbs’ Redefines A Cult Classic

The ‘Burbs is a well-remembered film in Tom Hanks’ career, gaining a dedicated following over the years. It marked the first time he played a father on screen, and he gave a surprisingly physical and funny performance – a side of Hanks audiences saw less of as he became known for more serious roles. The film remains a beloved rewatch thanks to its quirky characters and the humorous mystery Hanks and his neighbor, Rumsfield, stumble into, which quickly becomes a neighborhood spectacle. Both Hanks and the supporting cast shine, making the planned Peacock remake a promising prospect.

The new series, produced by Seth MacFarlane, seems to be focusing on Palmer as the main character. There’s speculation that Paul Walter Hauser might play the role of the critical husband, similar to the character in the original 1989 movie. It’s still unclear how everything will play out, but the trailer suggests a busy neighborhood with plenty of supporting characters who could be key to the show’s success. More information will be released as the February premiere of The ‘Burbs gets closer.
