Netflix has released its new Western series,
The new show, The Abandons, appears to be built around a bitter fight between Fiona Nolan (Lena Headey) and Constance Van Ness (Gillian Anderson). They’re battling over land that Fiona’s family lives on, as Constance wants to mine it for silver.
If you enjoyed the action in the latest episode of Landman but are still craving more, The Abandons on Netflix should satisfy you. This series delivers a thrilling mix of revenge, intense gunfights, and complicated family drama. Interestingly, the story comes full circle, starting and ending with the destruction of a family’s home.
Only 1 Of Fiona & Constance Walks Out Of The Fire In The Abandons’ Ending
The seventh episode of The Abandons, titled “This Was Meant to be My Peace,” reaches a dramatic conclusion when Fiona Dolan and the people of Jasper Hollow set fire to the Van Ness mansion with Constance, the head of the family, still inside. As Quentin Serra and Fiona’s son, Elias Teller, wheel a cart full of burning barrels toward the house, the wooden building quickly catches fire.
Fiona didn’t stop at just watching her rival’s house burn; she went inside to find Constance. They fought in Constance’s bedroom, and the fire and smoke quickly filled the room, seemingly overwhelming both of them. The last we see of Constance, she’s lying helpless, struggling to breathe. Fiona, however, seemed to be winning the fight.
Just moments later, a window on the first floor shattered, and a lone person emerged from the burning building. They stumbled down the stairs and out the front door, but it was impossible to tell who it was. They had long hair falling to one side and appeared to be wearing a long dress or coat.
The scene ends abruptly with a shadowy figure, leaving viewers to question whether Fiona or Constance managed to survive. According to Chris Keyser, the showrunner for The Abandoned, the writers haven’t even decided which character escapes the fire (as reported by Tudum).
Okay, let’s talk about the finale of The Abandons. It’s interesting – and frankly, a little sad – to know that Kurt Sutter, the guy who created this show, wasn’t even involved in finishing it. He left a few weeks before they wrapped up filming, apparently due to disagreements with Netflix about the direction of the story. It really feels like we didn’t get his ending, and I suspect the cliffhanger we’re left with isn’t what he originally envisioned. You can definitely feel a shift in tone, like a different hand was steering the ship.
We can only guess who might have survived the fire. However, a hint in the final moments of the episode offers a possible clue to help us make a more informed prediction.
We see Constance in her bedroom right before the figure appears on the stairs, but we don’t see Fiona at that time. Considering this, it’s likely that Fiona was the one who escaped the fire.
Honestly, figuring out who’s in that last shot is tough! Both Constance and Fiona have their hair done up – braids or pulled back tightly – and you’d expect that to come loose during a fight. Plus, they’re both wearing long outer layers: Constance has a dress, and Fiona’s got a coat, so clothing isn’t much help either. It’s a real mystery!
Why The Tellers & The Other Families Set Fire To The Van Ness Mansion
Because both shows were created by Kurt Sutter and take place in the Pacific Northwest, many believe The Abandons is essentially a prequel to Sons of Anarchy. This connection is further strengthened by the fact that two of Fiona Dolan’s adopted children on The Abandons are named Teller – the same last name as the central family in Sons of Anarchy.
Fiona, Elias Teller, Quentin Serra, and Miles Alderton all played a key role in the fire at the Van Ness mansion, which happened at the end of The Abandons. These families, who all lived in Jasper Hollow, set the fire together to permanently stop the Van Nesses from trying to take their land.
Fiona and Elias are also driven to attack because the Van Ness family is holding Dahlia, Fiona’s daughter and Elias’ sister, hostage. Just before the people of Jasper Hollow surround the Van Ness mansion, Constance seems ready to kill Dahlia right in front of Fiona.
Furthermore, destroying the mansion is a way for the characters to get revenge on the Van Ness family, bringing the story back to its beginning. The series opens with the Hollow ranch being attacked by the Van Ness family’s sons, Willem and Garrett, who burn trees and drive the ranch’s cattle off a cliff.
Who Else Dies At The End Of The Abandons
The season finale of The Abandons wasn’t just dangerous for Constance Van Ness and Fiona Nolan—it also mirrored the dramatic style of Yellowstone by eliminating multiple characters in a shocking climax. This suggests the show is positioning itself as a successor to Yellowstone on Netflix.
When the families of Jasper Hollow attack, they kill Claven, a guard working for Van Hess, and at least four of his fellow enforcers. Only Roache, a dangerous enemy who will kill several characters throughout the series, survives the first attack on the mansion. He was the one holding Dahlia captive.
In the end, Roache seemingly faces consequences for his actions. He’s shot by Miles Alderton and falls, immediately after shooting Quentin Serra. Although Quentin survives, Roache doesn’t reappear for the rest of the episode.
It’s uncertain if Dahlia Teller will survive the multiple stab wounds she received from Constance Van Ness. While she’s alive at the end of the episode, her injuries could be fatal, potentially leading to her death before a possible second season of The Abandons.
Why The Van Nesses Take Dahlia Teller Captive
After Dahlia stabs Garrett Van Ness in the stomach with a piece of broken glass – following the violent kidnapping of his sister, Trisha – she is captured by Roache and his men. Later, Constance mistakenly believes Dahlia is responsible for the death of her son, Willem, an event that occurred at the beginning of The Abandons.
Constance believes that if she captures Dahlia, Fiona will come after her. She plans to torture and kill Dahlia in front of Fiona, as revenge for their involvement in Willem’s death.

In the seventh episode of The Abandons, Constance learns that Fiona and the Tellers were responsible for Willem’s death, thanks to a discovery made by her son Garrett. Previously, the Van Nesses believed Willem had been killed by wolves, as a badly injured body thought to be his was found.
I was really hooked from the start of the movie when Garrett – played by Luke Till, who I recognize from the X-Men films and last year’s The Collective – catches Miles Alderton in the act of digging up his dog’s grave. It turns out Alderton is planning to leave Jasper Hollow before the Van Nesses arrive and start turning the whole town into a silver mine!
Despite his efforts, his actions unintentionally revealed the truth about his brother’s death to Garrett. Willem Van Ness was murdered by Fiona Dolan, who was seeking revenge for his sexual assault of her adopted daughter, Dahlia. After Dahlia initially wounded Willem with a pitchfork following the attack, Fiona ultimately killed him deliberately.
The people of Jasper Hollow decided to bury Willem’s body beneath the remains of Sweetie, Miles’ dog who had been killed by the Van Nesses. To cover it up, they claimed Willem had been killed by wolves, using a different body to make it look convincing. The Van Nesses remained unaware of the deception until Garrett uncovered the truth about Sweetie’s burial site.
The Abandons Ending Sets Up A Possible Season 2
The season of The Abandons ends on a thrilling cliffhanger, leaving viewers eager to find out who survived the deadly showdown between Constance and Fiona. Even with that battle unresolved, the reappearance of Garrett Van Ness at the very end of the season hints at more danger to come.
Along with Garrett, Fiona’s adopted kids Elias and Dahlia Teller, Albert Mason, and Lilla Belle all survive. Trisha Van Ness, who has an ongoing romantic connection with Elias, also lives on. If enough people watch the first season, a second season of The Abandons could help Netflix compete with Taylor Sheridan’s popular Western shows.
Despite some criticism about being overly dramatic, this show has everything needed to become a long-term hit, potentially rivaling popular series like Landman and the Yellowstone universe. While The Abandons is set in the classic Wild West, it has the potential to be a successful show on Netflix for years to come.
