The Mighty Nein Just Revealed Why Nott Drinks So Much

Nott the Brave, voiced by Sam Reigel, is a central character in The Mighty Nein. The Prime Video show has now explained the origins of her drinking. Nott is one of the characters from Critical Role’s second Dungeons & Dragons campaign, which inspired the animated series, and the original voice actors reprise their roles.

Nott is first seen in the opening episode of The Mighty Nein as a sassy goblin with a problem with alcohol. But as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that her drinking is a symptom of a much bigger issue, which has been explored both in the show and the original campaign materials.

From the start of her friendship with the wizard Caleb, Nott clearly has a strong desire for alcohol, even offering to commit a crime if he’ll buy her a drink. She gets defensive and avoids answering questions about her drinking, and when she doesn’t have alcohol for a while, she becomes even more irritable and prone to anger. It’s clear she’s struggling with an addiction and tries to hide it from others.

In the fourth episode of The Mighty Nein, Jester asks Nott why she drinks. Nott, glancing at her reflection in the bottle, replies that it’s not something she likes, but something she needs.

Jester: “No judgment but you’re pretty boozy for a little girl.”

Nott: “Not without a drink, I’m not.”

I tasted my mother’s sherry once, and I didn’t care for it. It smelled musty and made me feel gloomy. I don’t understand why anyone would enjoy that!

Nott: “Not ‘like.’ Need.”

The production notes for The Mighty Nein describe Nott as a blunt, often swearing goblin who struggles with alcohol. She drinks to cope with a difficult past, hoping her friend Caleb can help her find answers. This connection between Nott’s drinking and her history is supported by the story revealed in the original Critical Role campaign.

Why Nott Drinks So Much In The Mighty Nein Is Due To Her Halfling Past

Nott’s struggles with alcohol are rooted in her history, which hasn’t been shown in The Mighty Nein animated series yet. However, fans who followed the original Critical Role campaign already know the reasons behind her addiction.

Throughout the second campaign, it’s revealed that Nott wasn’t originally a goblin. She used to be a halfling named Veth Brenatto. When goblins raided her village, she was captured and tortured, then taken to a witch. When Veth regained consciousness, she had been transformed into a goblin, though the details of how this happened remain a mystery.

Veth’s struggle with alcoholism is thought to be linked to her transformation into a goblin. Riegel discussed on Talks Machina that becoming a goblin intensified Veth’s existing personality traits. What started as a fondness for collecting things turned into compulsive stealing, and her casual enjoyment of wine escalated into a serious addiction following the change.

Nott uses alcohol to escape painful memories, particularly the loss of her family during the goblin attack. She feels a connection with Caleb, a wizard, because she hopes he might be able to break the spell that affects her.

In Campaign 2, Episode 97, Caleb uses a spell to change Nott back into her true halfling form, and she remembers her original name, Veth.

Even though Prime Video’s The Mighty Nein is still new, it’s probable that the show will eventually animate these important moments in Nott’s story, if the series continues with additional seasons.
