But before the next installment, Avatar: Fire and Ash, arrives, he wants to clarify that it shouldn’t be considered a typical sequel. Cameron, a director famous for successful sequels, explains that Fire and Ash is a more significant, carefully planned step for the franchise—something beyond what most people mean when they say “sequel.” He’d rather describe it in a different way altogether.

Cameron is happy with how the Fire and Ash story concludes, even if no more films are made, though there’s been talk of potential sequels. He always intended the three films to be one complete story, carefully planned from beginning to end, rather than separate installments. As he explained to io9:

I don’t see ‘Fire and Ash’ as simply a follow-up to previous stories. It feels more like the natural ending to a long, planned arc. I prefer thinking of it as the final part of a saga because the core story was always designed to unfold this way. It’s different from most Hollywood sequels, which often feel rushed and are made just to capitalize on a previous success, even if the script isn’t strong.

The Titanic director went on to clarify the Avatar team’s approach to the series. He continued:

We’re not focused on quick results. This is a long-term project, and we always expected it would take time for viewers to connect with the characters. Even though they might look different – they’re ten feet tall and blue, for example – at their core, they’re still relatable people.

This is more than just a matter of word choice for the director. Describing Fire and Ash as the ending of a long-planned story changes how fans will see the new movie. It suggests this film is the final part of a story begun years ago, not simply a sequel made to build on the previous film’s popularity. This is a smart approach, considering how carefully the director has developed the world of Pandora, the Sully family, and the emotional core of the series.

This perspective also reveals Cameron’s thoughts on the future of the Avatar series. Though Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are currently scheduled for release in 2029 and 2031, he’s being realistic about whether they’ll actually happen. He explains that if those films are made, they will tell a completely new and separate story.

It’s a complete story with a clear start, middle, and finish, all unfolding across these two movies. Currently, though, they’re just ideas – not yet a reality.

Ultimately, whether we get more stories after this depends on how well the new movie does. Avatar: Fire and Ash is about to be released, and its success with critics and audiences will determine if James Cameron continues with a second saga.
