A British spy thriller is quickly becoming a hit on Netflix, gaining popularity just one day after it was added. It joins a growing list of successful modern British spy shows, like season 5 of Apple TV+’s Slow Horses and the second season of The Night Manager, which will be available on BBC One and Prime Video.
The spy thriller genre includes the show Killing Eve, which first aired on BBC America in 2018. It centers around Eve Polastri, played by Sandra Oh, an MI6 operative who pursues Villanelle (Jodie Comer), a skilled assassin connected to a shadowy organization. While the first two seasons of the show were highly praised by critics, the later seasons received a less positive reception.
According to FlixPatrol, Killing Eve is currently the 8th most popular series on Netflix worldwide, as of December 3, 2025. The show quickly climbed into the Top 10 lists in several countries, just a day after becoming available on the platform. It’s currently ranked as high as #3 in both Greece and Vietnam, though these positions may shift.
The British thriller was immediately a hit with both critics and viewers, who loved its fresh take on the classic spy versus spy storyline. The second season received similar acclaim, particularly for its feminist themes and clever use of familiar genre elements.
While the earlier seasons of Killing Eve were highly acclaimed, the last two weren’t as well-received. Season 4, for example, only received a 52% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes – much lower than the previous seasons, all of which were ‘Certified Fresh.’ The series finale was especially criticized by both fans and reviewers, who felt it was an unsatisfying conclusion to the show and its storylines.
Despite a disappointing ending, the show is experiencing a renewed surge in popularity internationally. Its distinctive take on the spy thriller, and the compelling dynamic between Eve and Villanelle, remain memorable regardless of the show’s overall quality. However, it’s unclear if it will maintain its position as a top title on Netflix.
Currently, Killing Eve is gaining popularity on Netflix worldwide, becoming a top 10 show in many countries. It’s uncertain how long it will stay there, but with four seasons and plenty of surprising plot twists, the series has the potential to keep viewers hooked for a while.
