Joachim Rønning, the director of *Tron: Ares*, explained that Jeff Bridges will be the only returning character from previous *Tron* films. No other actors from the franchise will reprise their roles in the new sequel.
Next month, Walt Disney Pictures will release *Tron: Ares* in U.S. theaters. This film continues the story of the *Tron* universe, following the events of the 1982 original and 2010’s *Tron: Legacy*. The movie features Jared Leto as Ares, alongside Greta Lee, Evan Peters, and Jodie Turner-Smith, among others.
What did Joachim Rønning say about Tron: Ares and Jeff Bridges?
Josh Bridges appeared in the first two movies of the series and is the only original cast member returning for the next installment. Notably, Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde will not be back as Sam Flynn and Quorra, respectively.
In an interview with SFX magazine, director Joachim Rønning explained why only Josh Bridges returned for the new installment. He said that while creative decisions play a role, actors sometimes choose not to reprise their roles. Rønning also stated that the story naturally evolved to a point where the original characters weren’t essential to the main plot, allowing them to move the narrative in a fresh direction while still respecting the established world.
As a fan, I was really interested to hear producer Justin Springer talk about the new film. He explained they’re picking up the story 14 years later, and his biggest concern is making sure the narrative works first and foremost. He doesn’t want to just shoehorn in cameos just for the sake of it – he feels that kind of ‘fan service’ can actually hurt the story. But he *did* promise they’re working on ways to surprise us! He mentioned his experience with ‘Tron: Uprising’ and the theme park rides, and how important it is to keep the ‘Tron’ universe alive through different mediums – whether it’s films, series, or anything else they get the chance to do.
Tron: Ares arrives on October 10, 2025.
