Rian Johnson is having a lot of success with his Knives Out films. The third movie starring Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc is getting great reviews during its limited theatrical release before it’s widely available next week. Fans have often suggested a Knives Out movie featuring the Muppets, but Johnson wasn’t sure how that would work. Surprisingly, it seems a version of that idea is already happening in some form.
As a big fan of these movies, I’m really excited about the third installment with Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc – it promises another complicated and surprising mystery! I recently read an interview with Rian Johnson in The Hollywood Reporter where he talked about something totally wild: the possibility of incorporating Jim Henson’s Muppets into the series. Apparently, he was asked about it, and this is what he had to say:
People online often talk about making a Muppet version of Knives Out, and I wanted to explain why that probably wouldn’t work. It’s not that it’s a terrible idea, but I really love both Muppet movies and the Benoit Blanc mysteries, and they’re just too different in tone. The problem is, putting Muppets in a *Knives Outstyle movie wouldn’t feel right because the plot relies on characters being murdered, and that doesn’t fit with the Muppets.
While other options exist, Johnson doesn’t believe a cameo by Benoit Blanc in a future Muppet film would be a good fit. He also stated:
Another option would be to put Benoit Blanc in a Muppet movie, which, while definitely entertaining, would probably ruin the believable nature of his character.
‘Sesame Street‘ Has Already Turned ‘Knives Out’ Into a Muppet Sketch
I was honestly surprised to see this! I know the creator, Johnson, was really worried about messing with the Wake Up Dead Man vibe by connecting it to the Muppets, since he loves them so much. But Netflix just dropped a cool little promo! They shared a clip from the new Sesame Street show, and it’s basically a hilarious puppet version of Knives Out – it’s called Forks Out: A Sesame Street Whodunit? It’s a fun way to get people excited about both shows, and I’m here for it!
The short video is clearly meant to entertain and teach children, but it’s also great publicity for Netflix. The company just started streaming new episodes of Sesame Street, and this unexpected boost in attention is already proving to be a smart move.
The best way to promote Wake Up Dead Man has been its recent theatrical release. Not only was the film successful in cinemas, but it also improved its critical reception, ensuring a strong start on Netflix. Currently, it boasts a 93% critics score and a 94% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes – impressive for a third film, as sequels often decline in quality unless they’re part of a planned series like The Lord of the Rings.
The fate of the Knives Out series is currently uncertain. This new film is the second sequel Netflix ordered after the first movie proved popular. While the idea of Muppets appearing was briefly considered, it seems unlikely now – which, all things considered, is probably a good thing.
