Be warned, this article contains spoilers for NCIS season 23, episode 7, “God Only Knows.” NCIS is starting the final chapter of a nearly 20-year run. With the Thanksgiving break over, CBS’s 2025-2026 season is back, and shows are quickly reaching the halfway point. The season kicks off with an investigation into a Navy SEAL who returned from captivity, but may have broken the law during his journey home.
NCIS is a TV institution, with a history rivaled by only a few shows like Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU. The original series has launched several spin-offs, including three that have released new episodes this year: NCIS: Tony & Ziva, NCIS: Sydney, and NCIS: Origins. Even with some dips in viewership and the departure of beloved cast members like Leroy Jethro Gibbs, David McCallum, and Emily Wickersham, NCIS remains a popular and highly-watched police procedural on network television.
This week’s episode presents a classic, straightforward mystery for the NCIS team – a case centered around the Navy that will likely be resolved quickly. It’s a welcome change after a season filled with special episodes, including the show’s first crossover with NCIS: Origins and a surprising return for McGee’s alter ego, Thom E. Gemcity. However, despite being a simpler story, “God Only Knows” marks the beginning of the end for this long-running series.
Vance’s Change In Demeanor Hints At A Possible Changing Of The Guards In NCIS
CBS
Throughout the current season of NCIS, there had been suggestions of a shift in priorities, but it became clear in season 23, episode 7 when Vance stopped Parker from questioning a chaplain. During a strained discussion, Parker sarcastically echoed Vance’s recent instructions: “Tread lightly, Keep it low key. We don’t need bad press.”
The shift in Director Vance’s behavior was hinted at before the start of NCIS season 23. He’s usually been a hands-off leader, offering support and occasional advice. However, Gary Cole recently told TVInsider that the reason for this change suggests larger issues are brewing within the show. Cole explained that there’s a power struggle happening between different agencies, and some of them may be undergoing significant changes.
Vance’s strict control over MCRT might be a way to exclude them from major decisions, allowing him to maintain his leadership position. Alternatively, he could be preparing the team for a future transition of power. After nearly twenty years at Navy Yard and a long career with NCIS, Vance has experienced significant personal and professional challenges. He dealt with the tragic accidental death of his wife and a strained relationship with his son, which they’ve since repaired, but remains deeply dedicated to his work.
After so many years, it wouldn’t be shocking if he decided to retire. In fact, season 22 of NCIS suggested Vance was considering it, as he openly discussed with Parker how he wanted to spend his time and with whom. During that same episode, he also began a romantic relationship with Lena Paulsen, a Deputy with Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service. While we haven’t heard much about them recently, it’s likely their relationship is still going well.
What The Potential End Of Vance’s NCIS Time Means For MCRT
Leon Vance first appeared on NCIS in Season 5, Episode 14, “Internal Affairs,” arriving at Navy Yard as the Assistant NCIS Director to investigate suspicions surrounding La Grenouille’s death. The FBI, led by Tobias Fornell, began questioning the MCRT team, and the then-NCIS Director found themselves as the main suspect. It was immediately apparent that Gibbs and Vance had differing approaches, and following Jenny Shepard’s death, their complex relationship became a key element of the show as Vance officially took over as Director.
Wow, a lot has changed for Vance and the whole NCIS team since we first met him. He really became one of them, always having their backs and keeping things grounded when things got too emotional. He was a huge help navigating some major shifts, especially when Gibbs retired during season 21. Honestly, losing him is going to be incredibly tough for everyone. Depending on what the writers do, replacing him could really shake up the dynamic of the main team – like a chain reaction. It’s going to be fascinating to see how they handle McGee’s story amidst all of this, too.
Beyond potentially losing Vance, NCIS is also preparing to say goodbye to Rocky Carroll, making this a particularly emotional time. Carroll not only portrays the even-keeled and encouraging Director, but he’s also directed several episodes. If Vance does retire, fans will be hoping Carroll continues with the show in a directing capacity.
