What Did Paul Dano Do to Quentin Tarantino?

Quentin Tarantino, a true movie lover, didn’t hold back when discussing acting performances. In a recent appearance on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, he revealed his top 20 favorite films and offered a surprisingly harsh critique of Paul Dano’s work in Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood. Tarantino suggested the film could have been his number one or two pick if not for Dano’s performance, which he felt was significantly weaker than Daniel Day-Lewis’. He bluntly stated the movie wasn’t a true two-person story and described Dano’s acting as underwhelming.

Quentin Tarantino readily offers solutions, and even suggested who could have played the Sunday brothers – Austin Butler, though Butler was only 15 years old at the time the movie came out. Tarantino praised Butler, but then surprisingly criticized Paul Dano, calling him a “weak” and “uninteresting” actor – even going so far as to label him the weakest in the Screen Actors Guild.
