Asmongold couldn’t believe Twitch has been running ads on his channel and he has been paid so little

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy sparked conversation recently when he gave streamer heavenly $100 in cash during a broadcast instead of buying subscriptions. He explained that direct payments allow streamers to keep the full amount. While subscriptions and donations are common ways to support creators, Twitch also automatically runs ads for affiliates and partners. Surprisingly, popular streamer Asmongold didn’t realize this was happening and discovered ads were running on his alternate channel, zackrawrr, without his knowledge.

Asmongold discovers he’s earning pennies from Twitch ads

Zack “Asmongold” Hoyt began creating World of Warcraft videos on YouTube and later transitioned to livestreaming on Twitch. He’s been a consistent presence on the platform since around 2011, making him a long-time Twitch streamer. However, he recently discovered (at the 3:05:12 mark of a recent stream) that ads are running on his channel, and he isn’t receiving any significant revenue from them.

Asmongold quickly turned off the ads shown during his streams after seeing something concerning. However, that might not solve the whole problem. Someone pointed out that it’s possibly impossible to block all ads, specifically those that play before a stream starts. I’m not a streamer, but it seems correct – Twitch’s help pages say streamers can only control pre-roll ads if they run ads themselves. So, while we might see fewer ads on Zackrawrr’s stream, they likely won’t be gone entirely.
