The final part of Stranger Things Season 5 will be available on Netflix shortly after Christmas. While much of the story remains unknown, one related project is confirmed to offer important insights into the series.
How might the Stranger Things play tie into Season 5 Part 2?
The initial episodes of Stranger Things Season 5 have built anticipation for a dramatic conclusion. Surprisingly, the Broadway show based on the series, “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” appears to be heavily connected to the final episodes and could even hint at storylines for a potential Season 2.
The new Broadway show tells the origin story of Henry Creel, the character who eventually becomes the villain Vecna in Stranger Things. It follows his move to Hawkins in the 1950s, the development of his powers, and the tragic events that lead to the death of his family. His father, Victor Creel – played by Robert Englund in Season 4 of the series – was wrongly accused of the murders.
The play explores the backstories of both Doctor Brenner and Henry Creel, revealing how Creel developed his abilities. It turns out he encountered the Mind Flayer after being sent to “Dimension X” – the monsters’ home world in Stranger Things. Essentially, Brenner took Creel in and designated him ‘Number One’ because he hoped to use Creel to reopen the gateway to Dimension X/The Upside Down.
I’m so excited for Stranger Things Season 5! From what I’ve heard, things really start to come together around episode three when Max shows up. Apparently, even though we thought she was gone, she appears to a captured Holly Wheeler inside Vecna’s mind. She tells them she’s been stuck in there, seeing all of Vecna’s memories. And get this – she even saw a glimpse of him as Henry back in school, and there was a flyer for a Sadie Hawkins dance with Hopper’s name on it! It’s all so mysterious and I can’t wait to find out what it means.
Max discovers that Creel is terrified of caves, which is unfortunate since Max has been hiding in one after being unable to return to the real world. The reason for Creel’s fear isn’t directly stated, but it seems linked to the play about his past. The play reveals details about Creel’s family history in Nevada, before they moved to Hawkins, and a strange experience he had with the Upside Down while playing in the desert.
It’s still unclear if Creel still has a human side that can be reached, or if anyone has managed to harm him. With four episodes left in the season, there are still many unanswered questions about Creel, Vecna, their connection to the Upside Down, and especially the Mind Flayer. We can expect to learn much more as the story unfolds.
The creators of the show, the Duffer Brothers, have hinted at a stronger connection between the stage play and the series. In an interview with Variety, they explained that they intentionally kept some details of the play vague, but that more connections will become clear as the final episode approaches.
It’s still unclear exactly how, but the Stranger Things Broadway play is now a significant source of clues for fans eager to learn more about what will happen in Season 5.
