A lesser-known survival thriller by Stephen King has been surpassed at the box office by a new heist film. While the heist movie is currently making more money, it’s receiving less positive attention from reviewers.
The film Now You See Me: Now You Don’t has earned $42.6 million in the United States, surpassing the total domestic box office revenue of Stephen King’s The Long Walk, which made $35 million. Worldwide, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t has performed even better, with current earnings of $187 million, significantly exceeding The Long Walk‘s global total of $63 million.
Although the newer film, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, might be more popular with general audiences, the original Now You See Me has received better reviews. Now You See Me is ‘Certified Fresh’ on Rotten Tomatoes with an 88% rating, compared to the sequel’s 61% ‘Fresh’ rating. Both movies are well-liked by viewers – The Long Walk (the original Now You See Me) has an 85% audience score, and the latest film has a solid 81%.
Based on a 1979 novel by Stephen King (writing as Richard Bachman), The Long Walk is a story set in a bleak future America where fifty boys compete in a televised walking marathon. The rules are brutal: if a boy falls below a three-mile-per-hour pace, he’s eliminated – permanently. The winner, the last one still walking, receives a substantial cash prize. The film features performances by Cooper Hoffman, Charlie Plummer, and Ben Wang, among others.
The latest installment in the Now You See Me series introduces a fresh group of illusionists alongside returning favorites, delivering exciting new magic tricks to audiences – and proving to be a box office success, surpassing the earnings of The Long Walk. The film features Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan, and Morgan Freeman reprising their roles, joined by newcomers Rosamund Pike, Justice Smith, Dominic Sessa, and Ariana Greenblatt.
The Long Walk Is Already Becoming a Hit on PVOD
I’m so glad to see The Long Walk continuing to do well! Even though it’s finished in theaters, it’s already becoming available to own digitally, starting at the end of October. We’re still waiting to hear when it will be available on streaming, but I’m excited we can still watch it!
While it didn’t perform as well as Now You See Me, The Long Walk has still been profitable for Lionsgate, earning $63 million at the box office on a $20 million budget. 2025 has also brought success to several other Stephen King adaptations, including Osgood Perkins’ The Monkey, and It: Welcome to Derry.
The Long Walk is now available on PVOD, and Now You See Me: Now You Don’t is now playing in theaters.
