A strange statue recently appeared in the Mojave Desert and quickly became a hot topic for gamers online. Initial guesses about what it might mean have turned out to be incorrect, making the upcoming reveal at The Game Awards even more of a mystery.
On November 28th, Geoff Keighley shared a photo of a strange sculpture and described it with the words “regal.inspiring.thickness.” Followers realized this was a reference to a What3Words location, leading them to a secluded area of land close to Joshua Tree, California.
The Game Awards official account further confirmed the location’s authenticity by sharing a satellite image, proving it was part of a planned promotion. Soon after, people visited the site and shared photos of a huge, eerie structure covered in carvings of skeletons, horns, and twisted branches. Visitors also reported the statue glowing red at night, which led to even more speculation.

Diablo and God of War theories debunked
Rumors about a Diablo 4 expansion or a new God of War game have been debunked by sources known for accurate information.
Earlier this week, industry insider Jez Corden confirmed a fan’s question about a statue being connected to the game Diablo, adding that it was connected to ‘more’ than just that. This short response quickly excited Blizzard fans.
However, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier quickly poured cold water on the idea.

Jason Schreier responded to speculation about a statue potentially hinting at a Diablo 4 expansion, stating he doesn’t know where the rumor originated and that the statue isn’t related to any upcoming expansion. He also mentioned he has information about what the statue is for, but isn’t planning to share it right now, calling it ‘a good one’.
If Blizzard is planning a new Diablo expansion, it would likely be revealed at next year’s BlizzCon rather than The Game Awards.
Ashong, a reliable source of leaks, also doesn’t believe this has anything to do with the next God of War game being developed by Sony Santa Monica. He stated he doesn’t see any connection to their current work.
Rumors died down even more after streamer Luke Stephens posted on X that Cory Barlog, the director of God of War, joined his Twitch chat and stated it wasn’t connected to the God of War franchise.
Cory Barlog was just in chat on my stream and confirmed this is NOT God of War related.

So what is it?
With both Diablo and God of War crossed off, the community is now back at square one.
Fans are already speculating about what this could mean for games like The Elder Scrolls VI or even Half-Life 3, but there’s absolutely no proof to back up those ideas. Right now, where this strange, horned, skeletal monument in the desert came from is still a complete mystery.
One theory gaining steam is that the statue relates to Saros.
There are unedited versions of this photo, and while they don’t perfectly match the creatures from Saros, they share some similarities. Both versions have smaller spikes on the head, a similar arrangement of limbs, and a lot of decay around the second creature.

One user shared several photos and explained that unedited versions of the image exist. While these versions don’t perfectly match the creatures from Saros, they share some similarities – like smaller head spikes, the way the limbs are positioned, and a lot of decay around the second creature.
The countdown is all we know for sure. With The Game Awards happening on December 11th, we’ll soon find out what the statue in the Mojave Desert is all about.
