A South Korean YouTuber played a key role in finding a missing man and bringing him home to his family. While broadcasting a live video, the YouTuber happened to see the missing man and alerted the police.
YouTuber 2ro2, with over 143,000 subscribers, was livestreaming in Gwangju when he encountered a man wearing a blue jacket. The man said he was a 23-year-old university student, but he looked much older and claimed to have delayed his mandatory military service.
The short, uncomfortable conversation could have ended there, but a viewer soon sent 2ro2 a missing person report from November 14th. It described a 44-year-old man named Kim, and 2ro2 immediately realized it matched the person they had just been talking to – his age, what he was wearing, and where he was located all fit the description.
Believing they had found the missing person, 2ro2 contacted the police and carefully tried to stay nearby without startling him. They went along with the man’s confusion about his age, hoping to keep him talking and provide updates to the officers. Even after the man started to walk away, 2ro2 continued to follow from a distance, keeping the police informed of his location.
Police soon arrived, confirmed his identity, and facilitated his return to his family.
Korean YouTuber and viewers locate man from missing person alert
This situation has started a discussion in South Korea about how digital alerts and community efforts are increasingly used to locate people who may be at risk.
It’s really worrying to learn just how many people go missing each year in this country. I recently read a government report from May that said there were almost 50,000 missing person reports in 2024 alone! What struck me most was that over 8,400 of those people had some kind of mental or cognitive disability, which makes the situation even more heartbreaking and complex.
The Independent reports that while officials haven’t released information about Mr. Kim’s disappearance, the case shows how quickly online communities, livestreamers, and rapid news sharing can help find people in danger.
Streamers have assisted in missing person cases before. For example, in 2024, Fortnite players Cody ‘Clix’ Conrod and Lacy from FaZe Clan were streaming live from Miami when they unknowingly interacted with a missing boy. The boy’s brother later spotted him in the stream footage and reached out to Lacy the following day.
I was so relieved to hear that the teenager who went missing in Michigan was found! After being gone for three months, it’s amazing they were located and brought safely back home. What a happy ending!
