Scientists have discovered a new type of fish that looks remarkably like Super Saiyan Goku from the popular anime, Dragon Ball Z. It’s an unusual discovery, as the fish shares a striking resemblance to the character!
On November 27, 2025, the University of the Ryukyus revealed they’d discovered a new species of goby fish. Researchers have named it “Vanderhorstia supersaiyan” because its fin pattern closely resembles the iconic golden hair of the Super Saiyan characters from the anime series Dragon Ball Z, specifically as first seen during the “Frieza Saga”.
Newly Discovered ‘Super Saiyan’ Fish Resembles Iconic DBZ Transformation
A new species of fish, measuring 77 millimeters long, has been discovered near Ishigaki Island in Okinawa, Japan. Named Vanderhorstia supersaiyan, and also known locally as “Ereki-haze” or “Electric Goby,” this fish is unique for its two bright yellow stripes running along its dorsal, anal, and tail fins. It shares its burrows with shrimp.
Hiroshi Hirasaka, a reporter and researcher known for finding unusual creatures, discovered a new species of golby fish – nicknamed ‘Super Saiyan’ – in the dimly lit waters off Ishigaki Island. He shared that donations to the Kuroshio Biological Research Institute helped cover the costs of collecting the specimen, and expressed gratitude to all who contributed.
I remember when Hirasaka really got everyone talking back in 2015 – he caught a massive Bering wolffish, also known as Anarhichas orientalis. He didn’t just take pictures of it, but he also quickly shut down the speculation that it had grown so large due to radiation. He jokingly pointed out that things only get that big in movies, saying, ‘This isn’t the world of Hulk or Godzilla!’
The recent discovery of a “Super Saiyan” fish is notable because it’s only the second unusual find in just a few weeks. Earlier in November, scientists discovered a new species of shark and named it after Pochita, the lovable but fierce character from the anime Chainsaw Man. Like the “Vanderhorstia supersaiyan,” this new shark was given the name “Pochitaserra patriciacanalesae.” The first part of the name, “Pochitaserra,” clearly honors Pochita from the popular anime. The second part, “patriciacanalesae,” pays tribute to Patricia Canales, a Chilean paleontologist who dedicated her career to studying ancient marine life in Chile.
