The new Batman features some lesser-known DC Comics villains, including Volcana, and her story is a key part of the show. What’s great about this animated series is how it explores Batman’s enemies – while familiar faces like the Joker and Two-Face appear, it also shines a spotlight on other, often overlooked, characters.
I’ve noticed a big difference between the Batman movies and the animated series. The animated shows get so many more episodes, which lets DC really explore a huge range of villains. It’s also where they’ve come up with some fantastic original characters – Harley Quinn being the biggest success story! Like Harley, Volcana actually started in an animated series, Superman: The Animated Series, and now she’s showing up in the new Batman show, which is really cool to see.
DC Has Revealed What Bat-Fam’s Volcana Looks Like
DC’s new show Bat-Fam on Prime Video successfully blends well-known Batman villains with lesser-known characters. While Batman battles classic foes like Clayface and Killer Croc, the main villain is someone fans will recognize, but in a surprisingly changed state.
I’m referring to Claire Selton, also known as Volcana. In the Bat-Fam series, a flashback reveals that Volcana fell into one of Ra’s al Ghul’s Lazarus Pits, which made her become a child again. After this experience, she changed her ways and is now living with Batman, Damian Wayne, and the rest of the Bat-Family at Wayne Manor.
Bruce Wayne takes on a parental role for the young hero, Volcana, and she develops a close, sibling-like relationship with Damian during the ten episodes of the Bat-Fam series. While the show maintains Volcana’s signature red hair, her overall appearance is significantly changed. She’s portrayed as shorter and with thicker hair, and often wears everyday clothes, though her red and black costume remains for when she’s fighting crime.
How Bat-Fam’s Volcana Compares To Other Versions Of The DC Villain?
The most helpful way to understand Volcana is to compare her appearances in Bat-Fam to her portrayal in Superman: The Animated Series. In Superman, Volcana was depicted as an adult with longer, more orange-red hair styled to resemble flames. She also wore a complete superhero costume, unlike her appearance in Bat-Fam.
Okay, so I just watched the new Batman series, and honestly, the character designs are…different. Compared to the original animated Volcana, who felt genuinely menacing and had a more grounded look, this new version is way more cartoonish. They’ve really emphasized exaggerated proportions and bold lines, which I guess fits the show’s overall lighter, more comedic tone. It’s a definite reinvention of the character, and while it’s not bad, the original Volcana just felt more real and, frankly, scarier. It’s a stylistic choice, but I miss the more realistic design of the original.
