A highly acclaimed 21st-century Western remake has found a new home on streaming services. While many great Westerns today are original stories, they often draw inspiration from classic tales of the Old West. Films like Django Unchained and Hell or High Water are examples of this, building upon the traditions of earlier Westerns.
Interestingly, one of the best Westerns made recently is actually a remake of an older film. The 2010 movie True Grit is a new version of the 1969 film with the same name, which originally starred John Wayne. This time, Jeff Bridges plays the lead role, alongside Hailee Steinfeld and Matt Damon. The remake was very well-received by both critics and audiences, earning 10 Academy Award nominations.
The 2010 film True Grit will be available to stream on Paramount+ starting Monday, December 1st. With the movie also celebrating its 15th anniversary this month, it’s a great time to revisit this Western remake – or discover it for the first time!
Although the movie True Grit was based on the 1969 film, the Coen brothers, who wrote and directed it, aimed to stay closer to the original 1968 novel by Charles Portis. They made several changes from the John Wayne Western, which helped the new film succeed with audiences.
The movie True Grit was a major financial success, earning over $252 million despite costing between $35 and $38 million to make. Critics loved it too, giving it a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and praising the acting and how closely it followed the original novel. Many people also believe True Grit helped bring Westerns back into popularity with a new generation of viewers.
Although you can also find it on Netflix and Tubi, this 2010 Western is a great addition to Paramount+’s collection. It complements shows like Taylor Sheridan’s 1883, 1923, and Landman, which are set in the West, as well as more recent Western movies like Old Henry from 2021.
As a huge film fan, I’m really excited that True Grit is coming to Paramount+ soon. I think it’s perfectly positioned to find a new audience there – it’s a really important film, people loved it when it came out, and it fits right in with the other great content on the platform. Honestly, for me, it’s the best Western remake we’ve seen in years, and I’d love for as many people as possible to discover (or rediscover!) it.
