Someone Asked Ken Jennings If He Goes To Bar Trivia To ‘Just Stunt On Those Hoes’

Ken Jennings is practically synonymous with trivia. The famous Jeopardy! champion and now host has won a lot of money on game shows, but you might wonder how often he applies his knowledge to win smaller prizes, like a $25 gift card to Chili’s.

Trivia nights are much more common in local bars than on TV shows like Jeopardy!. People usually play for fun, to win bragging rights, and maybe a small prize like a six-pack or a restaurant gift card. During a recent Jeopardy! audience question session, Ken Jennings was jokingly asked if he ever goes to bars to show off his trivia skills. He found the question funny and gave a considered response.

I don’t really enjoy bar trivia, to be honest. It always feels a little strange, no matter what happens. If I win, it’s awkward, and if I lose, it’s awkward too – it feels like no one’s ever really pleased with the outcome.

It’s similar to what happens with professional athletes, like NBA players. You’ll occasionally hear about stars showing up at local outdoor courts to play pick-up games with everyone. But most pros avoid that scene because it can be uncomfortable. People expect them to easily win, but the local players, motivated by the chance to compete against a pro, often play incredibly hard and get very competitive.

While trivia isn’t physically dangerous, many people are incredibly competitive when playing. Like any game of knowledge, luck plays a part. For instance, someone like Ken Jennings likely knows more than I do overall, but I might have an advantage in specific, niche topics where I have more specialized knowledge. Because of this, anyone can lose, especially when only a limited number of questions are asked.

Though he doesn’t regularly participate in local trivia events, Ken Jennings has formed a strong bond with the trivia community since his memorable appearance on Jeopardy!. He’s confidently stepped into the role of host following Alex Trebek, and it appears he’s poised to continue hosting the show for many years. He’s also clearly popular with both top trivia competitors and the show’s viewers, as evidenced by a widely shared video of a recent question-and-answer session.

Jennings’ funny answer is also reminding fans of perhaps his most iconic moment as a player on Jeopardy. The contestants were given a clue that asked for a term that means both a long-handled gardening tool and an immoral pleasure seeker. Jennings responded with, “What is a hoe?” but later found out they were looking for “rake.” The clip is perhaps the most shared in Jeopardy history, and for the record, he still thinks his response should have been counted. I do too.

Don’t expect to see Ken Jennings competing in trivia at your neighborhood pub, but you can watch him host Jeopardy! every weeknight.
