Like many fans who grew up with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I was disappointed to hear Paramount was pausing production on the more mature, live-action The Last Ronin movie to focus on another reboot aimed at younger audiences.
I was really excited about the R-rated The Last Ronin movie, and honestly, I’m disappointed. Even when it was first announced, I knew it was a risk, but it had the potential to be an amazing TMNT film. Now, it looks like the project is stalled, and might not happen at all.
This stinks, and I think it’s a huge mistake on Paramount’s part. Here’s why.

There Are So Many Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Fans In Their 30s And 40s!
I haven’t checked the numbers, but it seems like today’s kids aren’t as crazy about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as people might think – my students weren’t particularly enthusiastic when I asked. However, I’m pretty sure the biggest fans are now between 30 and 40 years old. That’s because the Turtles were incredibly popular around 1989-1991, when many of us were growing up.
Lots of Ninja Turtle cartoons have been made, but the one from 1987, which ran until 1996, is what many people remember most – and that’s my main point. A lot of Ninja Turtles fans are now grown up, and we’d be eager to see a more mature, R-rated Ninja Turtles movie, just like we did with films like Joker, Logan, and Deadpool.
I understand Paramount wants to protect the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brand and avoid a very mature film. However, movies with similar mature content, like those featuring Joker, Deadpool, and Wolverine, are still popular with kids and even have animated versions. Paramount could appeal to both audiences, so it’s unclear why they aren’t trying to do both.

Another Family-Friendly TMNT Film? Haven’t We Had Enough Of Them Already?
My favorite Ninja Turtles movie is the newest one, Mutant Mayhem – I really enjoyed it! But if you ask most fans, they’ll say the original 1990 movie is the best, although some prefer the sequel. It’s interesting to rewatch because, despite being rated PG, it has a surprisingly dark and mature feel. It’s the most grown-up live-action Turtles movie we’ve seen so far.
While the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies are generally made for kids, haven’t we seen enough of that? Many fans dislike the Michael Bay films, and Turtles III isn’t fondly remembered. Aside from the original movie, which is also aimed at younger audiences, all the live-action adaptations have been very kid-friendly.
So, why not a change? Why not something fresh and new, which brings me to my final point.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Need Something Fresh To Stay Exciting, And This Would Have Been It
If a movie is truly successful, there’s no need to constantly try to restart it – that’s what sequels are for. We’re getting a sequel to the well-received Mutant Mayhem, but the fact that they’re again attempting a live-action version suggests that approach isn’t quite hitting the mark.
Trying to make the Ninja Turtles series like Sonic the Hedgehog isn’t the solution, in my opinion. What made Sonic successful won’t automatically work for the Turtles. They need something new and original – something truly different.
The animated film The Last Ronin had the potential to revitalize the live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies, but unfortunately, it didn’t work out. It’s a real disappointment, Paramount. No fun for anyone.
So, what are your thoughts? Are you disappointed to hear that plans for The Last Ronin seem to be paused? I’m curious to know what you think.
