In July, Microsoft announced layoffs affecting many employees, including those at ZeniMax Online, the team behind The Elder Scrolls Online. This led to the cancellation of their new MMO, Project Blackbird. Despite these challenges, the developers are remaining optimistic about the future.
ESO will last for 30 years
PCGamesN recently spoke with Rich Lambert, the new director of ZeniMax Online Studios, who started in August. He described the recent layoffs as a very difficult time, saying he lost many colleagues he’d known and worked with for years. Despite this, he’s committed to leading the team and focusing on the future of *The Elder Scrolls Online*.
It was a very difficult and emotional period, losing friends and colleagues – people I’d worked alongside for a decade or more. It felt like a time of mourning. However, we remain dedicated to our community, the game, and all those who are still with us, and we need to keep moving forward, even though it’s challenging. The studio’s main goal is to build ESO into a massively multiplayer online role-playing game that people enjoy for the next thirty years.
Until August, Lambert led ESO. When he was promoted to studio head, Nick Giacomini, formerly the product management director, took over Lambert’s previous role. Lambert called the transition “bittersweet.”
Nick is now handling the daily operations, but I still keep an eye on things – I’m very attached to the company. I’m now focusing on the bigger picture and future plans, which is a new and exciting challenge for me. It’s been surprisingly difficult to step back, but I’m eager to see what Nick accomplishes and how the team evolves.

Despite being released a decade ago, *The Elder Scrolls Online* is still actively updated. The developers aim to make it competitive with other leading games in the genre, and its established fanbase suggests this is possible. We can also expect more players to check it out when *The Elder Scrolls VI* eventually comes out – if it ever does!
