Alexi Hawley, the creator of The Rookie, is finally talking about his upcoming spinoff. Even though season 8 of The Rookie hasn’t aired yet, plans for the new series are already underway. Production on the original show has been happening since summer, but Hawley will soon turn his attention to launching this next addition to the Rookie universe.
Following the popularity of The Rookie, ABC and creator Alexi Hawley are developing a second spin-off series. Called The Rookie: North, the new show will follow a similar concept to the original, but will be set in a Pacific Northwest suburb instead of Los Angeles. Jay Ellis will star as Alex Holland, the series’ version of Nathan Fillion’s John Nolan.
Following the announcement of his role, Ellis addressed the news on social media. He shared screenshots of articles and a video of Nathan Fillion welcoming him to The Rookie universe. In his post, Ellis confirmed the news, jokingly adding that he hasn’t received his locker assignment yet. You can see his complete post below.
The new series, The Rookie: North, follows Alex Ellis, who initially believed midlife crises weren’t for him. But after experiencing a home invasion, he decides to follow his dream and becomes a police officer in Pierce County. While the original The Rookie takes place in Los Angeles, this spin-off will be set in a variety of Washington State locations, ranging from city streets to forests. Filming is scheduled to begin in late winter or early spring.
With season 8 of The Rookie starting in January, fans are wondering if we’ll see characters from Ellis’ new show make an appearance. Since the two series take place in different states, a crossover would require some clever writing to bring Alex’s team and the Mid-Wilshire Patrol Division together. The Rookie‘s first spinoff, The Rookie: Feds, was unfortunately canceled after only one season. While there wasn’t one clear reason for its cancellation, a well-executed crossover event might have boosted its popularity.
Now that Ellis is confirmed for the upcoming The Rookie: North, ABC is actively working on assembling the rest of the cast. The Rookie’s success isn’t just due to Nathan Fillion’s character, Nolan, but to the strong storylines given to the entire cast. Creator Alexi Hawley recognizes this, so fans can expect more exciting casting announcements for the new series soon.
