„A true gaming icon.” Lara Croft celebrates a result that other female game characters can only dream of

Okay, so Lara Croft? Seriously, who hasn’t heard of her, even if you’re not into Tomb Raider? She’s a total icon, and has had crazy success. I just found out she’s actually in the Guinness World Records – not once, but twice! That’s pretty awesome, even for a gamer like me.

Lara Croft breaks records

Guinness World Records recently announced that Lara Croft has officially broken two world records, as listed on their website.

  1. the best “selling” video game female character;
  2. the video game character featured on the most magazine covers.

Lara Croft’s adventures have captivated audiences for decades. We first met the iconic archaeologist in the original Tomb Raider game back in 1996. Since then, the Tomb Raider series has grown to include 11 main games and numerous spin-offs, selling over 100 million copies by October of last year.

Lara has been featured on the cover of magazines an incredible 2,300 times, according to the most recent data from April. She’s graced the covers of well-known publications like Newsweek and Time.

According to a Guinness World Records editor, Lara Croft is a “true gaming icon” and has served as inspiration for games like Uncharted. Scot Amos, the head of Crystal Dynamics, also shared his thoughts.

We’re huge fans of Lara Croft and thrilled to be part of the Tomb Raider community. For almost thirty years, she’s been a role model, and we’re excited to see her achievements celebrated by Guinness World Records.

So, the last big Tomb Raider game we got was Shadow of the Tomb Raider back in 2018. Good news is, Crystal Dynamics is working on the next one – it’ll be the twelfth in the series, and they’re teaming up with Amazon Games to make it happen. But things haven’t been easy for the studio lately; they’ve unfortunately had to do layoffs twice this year.
