Asahi, a Japanese beer company, announced that a recent cyberattack may have compromised the personal information of up to 1.5 million people.
On September 29th, Asahi experienced a ransomware attack that locked up data on several servers and employee computers. The investigation revealed the attacker gained access to the network through equipment located within the data center itself before launching the malware.
The company’s investigation has revealed that data from customers who contacted support was accessed, and it’s now preparing to inform those individuals.
Asahi hit by cyberattack
Asahi says the data breach appears limited to systems within Japan, but it could affect a large number of people: over 1.5 million customers who’ve contacted Asahi’s various businesses, plus more than 330,000 people connected to their workforce – including employees, retirees, and their families – as well as 114,000 business contacts.

The company confirmed that credit card information was not affected by the incident, and they haven’t found any stolen data being shared online.
Atsushi Katsuki, President and Group CEO, has apologized for the recent system issues and any problems they caused. He stated that the company is working hard to fully restore the system quickly and is taking steps to prevent this from happening again, as well as improving security throughout the organization.
After the attack, Asahi announced several long-term security improvements. These include changes to how data travels through its network, stricter rules for outside access, better threat monitoring, updated data backups, and more training for employees.
