Be warned, there are a few minor spoilers for the romantic comedy Eternity ahead. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s currently playing in theaters and is part of the 2025 movie lineup.
The new A24 film, Eternity, centers on Elizabeth Olsen’s character, Joan, and her journey into the afterlife. She reconnects with both of her husbands: Miles Teller plays Larry, her longtime spouse, and Callum Turner portrays Luke, who died in the war. Da’Vine Joy Randolph and John Early also star as Anna and Ryan, respectively, and they help Joan, Larry, and Luke choose where they’ll spend eternity. The director recently explained that these roles were actually expanded from their original scope.
I was listening to an interview with David Freyne, the director of Eternity, and TopMob’s Hannah Saulic asked a question I was dying to know the answer to! She wanted to know if Da’Vine Joy Randolph and John Early had room to improvise, or if all their amazing dialogue was written down. Freyne said it was actually on the page – meaning it was scripted! But he explained that hadn’t always been the case, and then he went on to tell the story of how it changed.
The characters were already well-defined on the page, and I expected good performances. But the actors brought so much more to the roles than I’d anticipated. They were so fantastic that I found myself writing extra scenes for them at home, then bringing in new lines to the set the next day. The actors would playfully complain, ‘Oh, David, even more dialogue?’
John Early and Da’Vine Joy Randolph are incredibly funny performers, so it’s not surprising the director kept adding more scenes with them to his romantic comedy.
Freyne talked more about the two actors playing the afterlife coordinators, saying he was so impressed with their chemistry that he kept adding scenes for them. He ended up writing an entire scene just for the two of them, as he described.
I found their energy incredibly inspiring – they had such a brilliant dynamic. I actually wrote a scene specifically to showcase that connection. It’s a quiet moment where they’re just talking about their characters and walking together as the city comes to life. I wanted to create more opportunities for just the two of them to interact, so I added it a few days before filming.
Freyne explained that he created new scenes and storylines as a way to showcase the actors’ excellent performances. He wanted to provide them with strong material, which led to them having larger roles in the film. They filmed so much great content, particularly from Randolph and Early, that some of it didn’t make the final cut. Hopefully, that extra footage will be included in a blooper reel.
So, getting back to the details shown on screen, the director explained some things that were added during the filmmaking process. Interestingly, this included the developing romantic tension between Anna and Ryan, as Freyne shared with Saulic.
As I wrote the story, the characters Anna and Ryan became more and more central. Initially, I hadn’t planned a romantic storyline for them, but I thought it would be enjoyable to add one, and so their relationship developed naturally as the writing progressed.
I really love how well this story is unfolding. I think Eternity could become a truly great romantic comedy. A big part of what makes it work is that Anna and Ryan are always guiding both Joan and Larry—and the viewers—through the complexities of this unusual afterlife.
David Freyne explained that the characters played by Early and Randolph function similarly to a “Greek chorus,” and their strong connection with the main actors made them essential and incredibly valuable to the film.

The dynamic between Da’Vine and John, and their connection with Lizzy, Miles, and Callum, is fantastic, so we really wanted to showcase their scenes together as much as possible.
David Freyne told TopMob that the scenes featuring John Early, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Callum Turner, Elizabeth Olsen, and Miles Teller were the most enjoyable part of the film. He described the actors as being playful and having a natural, childlike energy when they were all together.
The actors’ enthusiasm really came through on screen, and it’s true – Anna and Ryan definitely made the story much funnier and more enjoyable. I was so happy to see their characters become more prominent!
