It’s common for streaming platforms to heavily promote new shows and movies—except, apparently, for a new series coming to Apple TV+. There’s been almost no publicity for it, and it’s as if the project never existed. This lack of promotion is likely due to accusations that the show’s creator plagiarized content, and legal action may be taken as a result. It seems the series will remain unpromoted for the foreseeable future.
On November 20th, Apple TV removed all marketing materials – including trailers and photos – for the upcoming French drama series, The Hunt, without providing a reason. The series was originally scheduled to launch in December. Now, according to French media expert Clement Garin (as reported by Apple Insider), the removal is due to allegations that the show’s creator, Cédric Anger, plagiarized the plot from the novel Shoot by Douglas Fairbairn.
Gaumont, a French production company, confirmed to Variety that the show has been removed from circulation because of suspected plagiarism. They have launched an investigation to look into the matter.
We’ve temporarily paused airing our show, ‘The Hunt,’ while we carefully review some concerns about its production. Protecting intellectual property is very important to us.
As of now, neither Guomont nor Apple has faced any complaints or plagiarism lawsuits. However, the removal of promotional materials online suggests they’re trying to reduce potential exposure in case a lawsuit is filed against them. Additionally, Apple Insider reports that Apple and Gaumont may be considering legal action against the series’ creator, Cédric Anger.
It’s not unusual for entertainment companies to face plagiarism lawsuits. Disney, for example, has been sued several times regarding the Pirates of the Caribbean films, and the Oscar-winning film The Shape of Water also faced plagiarism accusations. Typically, these claims surface after a movie or show is already popular, which can actually help the person making the claim. So, when a studio delays a release before it comes out, it usually suggests the plagiarism concerns are serious.
I recently came across a really gripping story, Douglas Fairbairn’s Shoot from 1976. It’s about a hunting party that has a frightening run-in with another group in the woods, and things quickly turn violent. What’s interesting is that after it’s over, these hunters go back to their everyday lives, but they’re constantly looking over their shoulders, convinced the others are still out to get them. Apparently, it’s been made into a movie before, also called Shoot.
Apple has removed the trailer from its official YouTube and social media pages, but it’s still available online because others have reposted it. Based on this trailer, the main idea of The Hunt appears to be very similar to that of Shoot.
It will be fascinating to see how this situation develops. Production on The Hunt is paused while the plagiarism claims are investigated. Even if the legal issues are resolved, it could take months or even years before the series can be released. There’s also a chance the legal complications could prevent The Hunt from ever being released at all.
