Christopher Nolan’s new film, The Odyssey, is shaping up to be a truly grand cinematic experience – the kind of large-scale movie that’s become rare in Hollywood. Interestingly, the cast and crew reportedly took a break during filming to watch another impressive 70mm epic, thanks to a screening organized by Tom Holland.
There’s been a lot of discussion about how The Odyssey was filmed, including the stunning locations and the massive amount of IMAX film used. Interestingly, one set actually had to be built on a soundstage. Matt Damon shared with Empire Magazine (via IGN) that while filming at Sony, Tom Holland – who plays Telemachus in the movie and is friends with Sony’s Tom Rothman – arranged a full 70mm screening of Lawrence of Arabia for the cast and crew. Damon went on to say…
We were visiting Sony, and Tom Rothman had a beautiful 70mm print of the film. Because Tom Holland is Spider-Man and very popular with the studio, he asked Rothman if we could have a screening. We were able to watch the full four-hour version on a Sunday.
When you’re creating a large-scale film meant for the big screen, it’s helpful for everyone involved to see similar movies from the past. It can give the cast and crew a clearer idea of the overall vision. However, Lawrence of Arabia is quite old now—over 60 years! Finding a high-quality 70mm print isn’t easy, even in Hollywood. Fortunately, Tom Holland has a connection who could help.
Even though Tom Holland is still early in his career, he’s become a favorite with studio heads. Reportedly, he played a key role in restarting negotiations between Sony’s Tom Rothman and Disney’s Bob Iger, ultimately leading to a renewed agreement for Spider-Man to continue appearing in Marvel Cinematic Universe films after their previous deal expired.
Tom Rothman is known for being careful about who he lets borrow his print of Lawrence of Arabia. While Tom Holland might have been able to request it anyway, it likely helped that he planned to show it to Christopher Nolan and the cast of The Odyssey. Matt Damon suggests Holland had access that Damon himself didn’t.
I’m a huge fan of Lawrence of Arabia and have always dreamed of seeing it on a big screen – I’ve only ever watched it on smaller ones. Anyone who gets to work with Christopher Nolan clearly loves movies, and they must have been thrilled to experience this film that way. I guess I need to become friends with the head of Sony, or maybe even Tom Holland, to get a chance like that!
