Star Wars Director’s New Sci-Fi Movie Gets Exciting Update

Rian Johnson, the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, recently shared news about his upcoming science fiction film.

What is the update on Rian Johnson’s next movie?

During an interview with Variety while promoting his latest film, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, Daniel Craig Johnson shared details about his next project. He mentioned the movie will be inspired by 1970s thrillers, a concept he’s touched on before.

Johnson shared that he’s really excited about his next project. He explained that the best approach is to simply pursue what feels right creatively. He described the project as a throwback to the suspenseful thrillers of the 1970s, with a touch of science fiction.

Johnson is currently writing the original script, and he plans to shoot it in 2026.

Rian Johnson’s newest mystery, Wake Up Dead Man, a follow-up to Knives Out, is currently showing in select cinemas and will be available to stream on Netflix starting December 12, 2025. Daniel Craig returns as the detective Benoit Blanc, this time investigating a murder that takes place at a church. The film features a large cast, including Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church.

Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi is a particularly controversial installment in the Star Wars saga. Even though it sparked a lot of debate, the film still earned an impressive $1.3 billion around the world.

After directing The Last Jedi, Lucasfilm asked Rian Johnson to develop a new Star Wars trilogy. But those plans have largely been abandoned. Despite this, Johnson still hopes to work on Star Wars projects in the future.

Johnson shared that Star Wars has deeply influenced him, saying it’s become a core part of who he is and how he sees the world.
