Shawn Levy, who is directing the new Star Wars movie Starfighter, has shared what Disney and Lucasfilm asked him to focus on while making the film. The companies, which now control Star Wars, primarily want the movie to be fun – something fans likely want too.
While publicizing the final season of Netflix’s hit show, Stranger Things, director Shawn Levy spoke on The Business podcast. He explained the surprising decision to release the final episodes in theaters, despite Netflix’s focus on streaming. Levy also shared details about his upcoming Star Wars film, Starfighter, calling the project creatively freeing. He said Disney and Lucasfilm encouraged him to create something fresh with the film, which stars Ryan Gosling.
We weren’t given any strict rules or direction, just consistent support to create something fresh. And that’s really what happened – Starfighter features entirely original characters and ideas that Jonathan Tropper and I developed together, without outside influence.
I’ve had a lot of creative freedom working on this film – as much as I’ve had on any of my other projects, including ‘Free Guy’ and ‘The Adam Project’. Because this movie isn’t based on any existing story, it’s been incredibly liberating so far.
The Daunting Task of Trying to Revive the ‘Star Wars’ Flame

Walt Disney Studios Motions Pictures
The Star Wars franchise is facing a bit of a challenge right now. Following the controversial sequel trilogy and a wave of equally debated Disney+ shows, fans are more split than ever. While some fans readily accept anything new Disney creates, others are longing for Star Wars content that feels more familiar. Disney needs to focus on winning over this latter group of fans to regain broader support.
Director Levy is tackling a tough job with the new Star Wars film. He’s promised it will be a fresh story, not tied to existing sequels or prequels, with completely new characters and a new timeline. While acknowledging certain Star Wars guidelines must be followed, Levy explained in a podcast that creating something truly new is a daunting, but necessary, challenge for the franchise.
Look, it’s still genuinely scary trying to get this right! I was at Star Wars Celebration with Ryan Gosling, and you could feel how much the fans want, and expect. It’s intense, honestly. But being in Tokyo really drove home something else: people are craving something fresh right now. So I feel incredibly fortunate to be working on a project that I hope delivers exactly that.
The new film, Star Wars: Starfighter, is scheduled to come out in May 2027, marking the 50th anniversary of the very first Star Wars movie. Jonathan Tropper, who has collaborated with the director on This Is Where I Leave You and The Adam Project, is writing the script.
