The latest trailer for ‘Y: Marshals’ highlights Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, showcasing his skills as an action hero while also hinting at his deep unhappiness following the events of ‘Yellowstone’. Created by Taylor Sheridan, David C. Glasser, and Spencer Hudnut, the series will debut on CBS on March 1, 2026.
Kayce Dutton, a former Navy SEAL and Montana Livestock Commissioner, is asked to join the U.S. Marshals to combat criminal groups in the state, including gangs and cartels. He’s a strong and capable leader, perfect for an action-packed series, having proven himself as a skilled fighter on Yellowstone, where he defended the Dutton family’s land from many threats.
The Dutton family isn’t known for being cheerful, and Kayce has always struggled more than most. The new series Y: Marshals doesn’t offer him the tranquility he was seeking after he, his wife Monica, and son Tate moved to East Camp following the events of Yellowstone.
Kayce Is The Saddest Dutton After Yellowstone
Kayce Dutton joining the U.S. Marshals and going back to a dangerous life in law enforcement is a disheartening development, and not something to be happy about. Sadly, taking the lead in Y: Marshals makes Kayce the most tragic of the Duttons remaining after the end of Yellowstone.
While Kayce faces an uncertain future, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) seems well-positioned after Yellowstone. She has a strong and loving marriage with Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser), and as the most astute businessperson in the Dutton family, she possesses the intelligence and means to thrive financially.
Kayce doesn’t have many clear career paths. He wasn’t built to be a traditional rancher, and he seems to attract trouble. Becoming a U.S. Marshal would put his abilities to good use, but it would also mean giving up on his desire for a peaceful life and escaping the violence that follows him.
Kayce keeps getting pulled back into violence, even though he wants a different life. Plus, it looks like he might have to raise his son, Tate, on his own, as the actress who plays Monica won’t be appearing in the upcoming season of Y: Marshals.
Y: Marshals Trailer May Have Confirmed Monica Dutton’s Fate
As a huge fan of Y: Marshals, I’ve been poring over the trailer, and it’s striking that Monica Dutton is completely absent – we don’t see or hear a thing about her. Even more concerning, Kayce’s voiceover doesn’t mention her at all! But there are hints that suggest what might have happened. We see Kayce kneeling by a grave, and it doesn’t seem to be at the family cemetery on the ranch, but rather at East Camp. It’s a subtle detail, but it definitely makes you wonder if something terrible has happened to Monica.
When the story of Y: Marshals starts, it seems Monica Dutton has already passed away. Her death deeply affects Kayce and is a major reason he joins the U.S. Marshals. Simply put, with Monica alive, Kayce wouldn’t have a strong motivation to put himself in harm’s way unless his family was directly in danger.
Kayce hoped for a peaceful future with his wife and son after the events of Yellowstone. Losing Monica, or even her choosing to leave, would devastate him. Regardless of whether Kelsey Asbille participates in the Y: Marshals series, Monica won’t be a regular character going forward.
Fans are thrilled to see Kayce Dutton return in Y: Marshals, the first of several new shows connected to Yellowstone. It’s a bit unfortunate for his character, but the more difficult things become for Kayce, the more captivating his story is.
