The American Revolution
$70
Ken Burns’ newest documentary is a standout achievement, and PBS timed its release perfectly for the holidays. Burns, along with his team – including co-directors Sarah Botstein and David Schmidt, and writer Geoffrey C. Ward – thoroughly examines this crucial period in history, offering a perspective rarely taught in schools. The documentary reveals that the conflict wasn’t just about liberty, but also about westward expansion and the significant, often overlooked, contributions and experiences of enslaved people. Featuring captivating performances from a stellar cast – including Josh Brolin, Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Samuel L. Jackson, and Matthew Rhys – and narrated by Peter Coyote, this documentary makes history both engaging and accessible.

Chain Reactions
$36
Dark Sky’s limited-edition digibook is a standout release this year. The documentary by Alexandre O. Philippe doesn’t just explore the impact of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre; it examines how different viewers have interpreted it over time. To highlight this, the set includes multiple versions of the original film – including a 16-mm print, a 35-mm grindhouse print, and a 1980s Slovakian Betamax tape, plus five more – never before available on disc. These versions aim to recreate the experience of watching the film on a vintage TV in the 80s or at a late-night European screening. It’s a remarkably clever concept.

Creepshow Complete Series
$100
It’s becoming rare to find TV shows released on physical media like boxed sets. While classic shows received this treatment years ago, many newer shows go straight to streaming. However, Shudder is different. They’ve created a beautiful boxed set of their popular show, Creepshow, specifically for devoted fans. The set’s design reflects the show’s comic book and television roots. Creepshow, which aired from 2019 to 2025, featured standalone episodes based on stories by acclaimed authors like Stephen King (“Gray Matter”), Joe Hill (“By the Silver Water of Lake Champlain”), King (adapted by Greg Nicotero – “Survivor Type”), and Joe R. Lansdale (“The Companion”). Like many anthology series, Creepshow has some stronger and weaker episodes, but this collection is essential for anyone who loves the show’s best moments.

Dark City
$35
As a serious film collector, I can tell you this new release from Arrow Video is something special – truly the highlight of a fantastic year for them. The packaging alone is gorgeous, with incredible artwork by Doug John Miller. But it’s what’s inside that really blew me away. They’ve gathered every piece of archival material from previous releases of Alex Proyas’s Dark City, and added a ton of brand-new collectibles – a beautiful 60-page book, a double-sided poster, art cards, a postcard, and even a business card from the character Dr. Schreber! The biggest draw, though, is the stunning new 4K restoration of the director’s cut – and trust me, that’s the version you want to see. They’ve also included a fantastic new documentary called Return to Dark City and a really insightful visual essay by Alexandra West titled Rats in a Maze. And if you’re still craving more, the director’s cut boasts three commentary tracks – one from Proyas himself, another from the writers Lem Dobbs and David S. Goyer, and a third from the legendary Roger Ebert, who was a huge fan of this film.

Dogma
$30
The lead-up to the release of Kevin Smith’s follow-up to Chasing Amy was chaotic. Dogma, a project Smith had been developing for years, became a struggle with Harvey Weinstein, who wanted to heavily alter the film and then essentially abandon it with Lionsgate. After a brief Blu-ray release in 2008 that quickly went out of print, the film became difficult to access because Weinstein retained the home media rights, preventing streaming or 4K versions until now. Smith is celebrating this renewed release by providing a new introduction and participating in Revelations: Making Dogma, a full-length documentary about what he considers his best film. The release also includes excellent bonus content from older physical editions, such as a lively commentary track featuring Smith, Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, and others. Regardless of your opinion of his movies, Kevin Smith is exceptionally talented at recording commentary tracks.

Eyes Wide Shut
$50
Criterion has been releasing a number of 4K Blu-rays, but they saved one of their best for the holidays. And, arguably, Stanley Kubrick’s 1999 film Eyes Wide Shut is a Christmas movie! This release boasts one of the finest 4K restorations ever, carefully preserving the film’s original grain while making the colors vibrant. The movie itself – a compelling and steamy thriller about a marriage on the rocks, starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman – remains a standout from the 1990s. The package includes insightful new interviews with the cinematographer, second-unit director, and archivist. It also features a wealth of bonus content, including Kubrick Remembered, his Directors Guild of America acceptance speech, a 1999 press conference, and the fascinating Lost Kubrick, which explores two of his unfinished projects: his planned adaptations of Napoleon and The Aryan Papers.

This holiday season, fans of the cult classic Re-Animator have two new 4K options to celebrate the film. Ignite Films is releasing a special edition in the US, while Second Sight is doing the same in the UK. For serious collectors, region codes aren’t a barrier, and both releases offer unique bonus content. The Ignite edition includes a 40th-anniversary discussion with key cast and crew, a new interview with the editor, and a full-length documentary. The Second Sight release boasts stunning cover art, a 120-page book, art cards, a video essay exploring Lovecraftian horror, and a fresh audio commentary. Ultimately, if you’re a dedicated Re-Animator fan, you’ll probably want to own both versions!

Quentin Tarantino 4Ks: Jackie Brown, Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, and Inglourious Basterds
$58
It feels a little strange that we haven’t gotten a new Quentin Tarantino film since the pandemic started. This is his longest gap between movies ever – over six years now! He’s being super careful about choosing what he says will be his last project, but 2025 has been all about revisiting his classics, and it’s been amazing. They’re releasing gorgeous collectible SteelBook editions of his films. Actually, Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair is finally getting a limited run in theaters on December 5th, with a Blu-ray likely to follow next year. Beyond that, we’ve already seen fantastic SteelBooks for Jackie Brown, both Kill Bill volumes, and of course, Pulp Fiction. And Arrow really went above and beyond with a special boxed set for Inglourious Basterds way back in January! It came with a huge book, a poster, beer mats, a program, art cards… and get this, a strudel recipe! Seriously, who says physical media is dying? Strudel, people! Strudel!

Tombstone
$43
Following the recent passing of Val Kilmer, a beautifully packaged SteelBook edition of one of his most celebrated films quickly sold out. Many fans were revisiting his work, remembering his captivating presence in movies from the 80s and 90s. This release isn’t just visually appealing; it also features a new 4K restoration of the classic western, which also stars Kurt Russell, Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, and Powers Boothe. While Kurt Russell is enjoyable as Wyatt Earp, the film truly belongs to Kilmer’s unforgettable performance as Doc Holliday – a standout western role of its time.

John Woo 4Ks: The Killer, Hard Boiled, and A Better Tomorrow
$50
Shout Factory has truly delivered for action movie fans this season, releasing beautifully restored 4K versions of some all-time classics, complete with amazing bonus features. The films of John Woo from the 80s and 90s are particularly important, and Shout Factory has either already released them individually or will be soon. What’s even better is that Woo himself was involved, not only approving the restorations but also participating in new interviews and commentary tracks. There’s so much great content here, it’s hard to highlight it all, but here’s a taste. The release of The Killer includes a full-length documentary about Woo’s career, The Hero of Heroic Bloodshed: A John Woo Documentary, plus deleted scenes and new interviews with Woo, Terence Chang, David Wu, and author Grady Hendrix. Woo also provided commentary and interviews for Hard Boiled. And don’t miss the A Better Tomorrow Trilogy, featuring Woo’s two films and Tsui Hark’s third installment, all in stunning 4K. These are all essential additions to any action fan’s collection.

007: James Bond – Sean Connery 6-Film Collection
$100
Warner Bros. often re-releases James Bond films, and this new collection focuses specifically on the six films starring Sean Connery – widely considered the best 007. Instead of forcing fans to buy large, complete sets to get a single favorite like Goldfinger, this release lets you collect just the Connery era. Plus, these films have never looked better, remastered in stunning 4K. You can even choose special SteelBook cases with new artwork, or a more compact boxed set. The films included are Dr. No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, and Diamonds Are Forever. (Note: Never Say Never Again is not part of this collection.)

The Luc Besson Collection 1983-2005
$170
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has released a beautiful new boxed set showcasing nine films from director Luc Besson, a filmmaker once considered a visionary. While the set includes nine movies, six are available in 4K resolution – several of which haven’t been released in high definition before. Each film also includes extra features, though many are taken from older releases. The highlights are undoubtedly La Femme Nikita, Léon: The Professional, and The Fifth Element, all looking and sounding fantastic in 4K. Subway, The Big Blue, and The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc are also available in high definition, while Le Dernier Combat, Atlantis, and Angel-A are included on standard Blu-ray.

Shudder 10th Anniversary Collector’s Edition
$81
Shudder has become a major player in the horror world over the last decade, even though streaming and physical media often compete. (It’s frustrating that some films, like Killers of the Flower Moon, still aren’t available on Blu-ray or DVD!) To mark their tenth anniversary, Shudder has released a boxed set featuring ten of their most popular original horror films. While the set only includes Blu-ray versions (not 4K) and lacks bonus features, it contains some fantastic movies from the last ten years, including The Dark and the Wicked, Host, Mad God, Caveat, Skinamarink, Late Night With the Devil, and In a Violent Nature. The set also includes Terrified, The Mortuary Collection, and V/H/S/94, which, while not everyone’s favorites, will still appeal to collectors. Here’s hoping Shudder continues to deliver great horror for another ten years.

The Wes Anderson Archive: Ten Films, Twenty-Five Years
$250
Criterion is known for winning the Box Set of the Year award, and they’ve done it again with this impressive collection of Wes Anderson’s first ten films. While Criterion has released Anderson’s movies before, this is the first time they’ve all been together in one set, and many are now available in 4K resolution. The packaging is beautifully designed – it looks like something straight out of one of Anderson’s films, like a charming camping kit, with each movie housed in a case resembling a small book. The set boasts over 25 hours of bonus content, plus a booklet featuring insightful essays from writers like Kent Jones, Dave Kehr, Bilge Ebiri, and even Martin Scorsese, a huge fan of Anderson’s debut, Bottle Rocket. The films included are Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Isle of Dogs, and The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun.
