T1, led by Faker, has agreed to compete against Grok, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence, in a League of Legends showdown.
I’ve been following Grok since it came out, and it’s amazing how quickly Elon Musk is trying to get it involved in game development! He’s really excited about the possibility of building an AI game studio, and he actually thinks AI could create a whole game all by itself by 2029 – which is pretty wild to think about!
Meanwhile, the world’s wealthiest person has proposed a new challenge for AI: to defeat the best League of Legends team by 2026.
He’s curious to see if Grok can outperform the top League of Legends team, T1, and its star player, Faker. It’s a bit like the famous match between the Deep Blue computer and chess master Garry Kasparov.
Elon Musk wants to see if Grok can beat T1 in LoL
Elon Musk recently demonstrated Grok 5 on X, explaining that it can learn to play any game simply by reading the rules and trying things out.
He wondered if Grok 5 could defeat the top League of Legends players in 2026, outlining the conditions that would need to be met first.
We’re going to test if Grok 5 can compete with top professional League of Legends teams by 2026, but with some limitations. First, it can only ‘see’ the game through a camera, just like a person with perfect vision. Second, its reactions and clicking speed will be capped at human levels.

Elon mentioned that safeguards would be implemented to give the human team an edge, effectively limiting what the AI can do.
In this game, Grok would see the screen just like a person with normal vision, using a standard camera feed. Its reflexes and how quickly it can click would also be limited to typical human speeds.
The challenge quickly became popular online, attracting interest from many retired professional gamers.
Former League of Legends pro player Eugene ‘Pobelter’ Park said he’d be happy to contribute his expertise, noting he found the AI vs. Dota 2 matches fascinating and has long hoped to see a similar competition with League of Legends.
Oriol Vinyals, a researcher who became a Grandmaster in StarCraft, got Elon Musk thinking by proposing he play against Grok, a chatbot, in the classic real-time strategy game. He jokingly suggested, “Even better if robots could control the mouse and keyboard!”
“Sounds good,” Elon replied.
Not everyone was convinced Grok would have a fighting chance, though.
As a big fan of League, I was really surprised to hear Voyboy, the former pro player, didn’t believe Grok had a shot at winning anything until at least next year. It’s crazy how quickly things can change in esports!
He claimed you wouldn’t stand a chance against even a professional League of Legends team, let alone a player like Faker and his teammates. He believes winning at the highest level of League requires a deep understanding of the game, strong teamwork, and the ability to adapt to constantly changing situations.
