It: Welcome to Derry – Why Pennywise’s Midseason Debut Was Perfectly Timed

The story of Pennywise continues with It: Welcome to Derry, a new series that takes place before the events of the popular It movies. While some viewers initially expressed concerns, the show wisely paced its introduction of the terrifying clown, not fully revealing him until the fifth episode. This prequel, set in 1962, builds upon the success of Andy Muschietti’s films and expands the world of Stephen King’s classic horror story.

Welcome to Derry introduces a fresh group of children who encounter the terrifying, shape-shifting entity known as It. Simultaneously, the story follows a military team—led by Dick Hallorann (Chris Chalk) and Leroy Hanlon (Jovan Adepo)—attempting to capture It and use its powers as a weapon.

Although Pennywise was originally planned to appear in the Welcome to Derry series, his return was pushed back. While hints of his presence appeared in the third episode, viewers didn’t actually see him until the fifth episode.

It: Welcome To Derry Was Right To Wait Until Midseason For Pennywise’s Official Debut

Okay, so as a big fan of the Welcome to Derry series, let me tell you about Pennywise’s appearances. It started subtly – you could barely spot him in the shadows of a photo Will Hanlon took at the cemetery in episode 3. Then, in episode 4, things got creepier with that signature red balloon popping up everywhere, and we actually saw him in the Hanlon’s yard at night. But it wasn’t until season 5 that Pennywise really went full-on terrifying, luring those poor kids down into the sewers. That’s when the Dancing Clown truly arrived!

As previously discussed, Pennywise won’t appear immediately in Welcome to Derry. Producer Barbara Muschietti explained that they want to portray Pennywise as unpredictable, revealing him at just the right times. Director Andy Muschietti also noted that the show will unfold gradually, building suspense over time.

One of the biggest draws of Welcome to Derry was the return of Pennywise, so it’s no surprise some viewers were frustrated by the wait to see him. However, holding off on showing the clown allowed the story to fully introduce the new characters, explore their histories, and establish their personal struggles and fears.

As a huge fan of the It story, I really appreciated how Welcome to Derry didn’t rely too much on Pennywise right away. It’s easy to forget that Pennywise is just one form It takes – it can be anything. Holding back on showing Pennywise allowed the series to build tension with other incredibly creepy forms, like Lily’s dad and those horrifying snail eyes, without pulling focus from the characters or giving away when Pennywise would finally show up. It made those other scares even more effective, honestly.

How Pennywise’s It: Welcome To Derry Appearance Pays Off In Episode 5

It took five episodes for Welcome to Derry to finally reveal Pennywise, and the payoff was worth the wait because of everything the show built up beforehand. The series slowly hinted at Pennywise’s arrival from the very beginning, with the first clear suggestion appearing in episode 3 with that photograph.

By that point, the children had glimpsed It in various forms and seen its shadowy outline, but they still didn’t know what it truly looked like. The way It changes from Matty into Pennywise is brilliantly scary, and it works perfectly because both the characters and the audience were anticipating this reveal – the kids with fear, and the audience with excitement.

Pennywise doesn’t appear for very long in the fifth episode of Welcome to Derry, which actually works well for his introduction – it leaves viewers eager to see more. It remains to be seen what Pennywise will do throughout the series, and what forms it will take.
