Many people consider it the best fantasy film of all time, and it’s currently popular on streaming services for good reason. Released in 1939, The Wizard of Oz remains a beloved and incredibly influential movie. Its popularity is also getting a boost with the release of Wicked: For Good, a new film that tells the story of the witches of Oz and reimagines the classic tale.
Directed by Victor Fleming, The Wizard of Oz is a classic film based on L. Frank Baum’s first book in the fantasy series. It features Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Margaret Hamilton, Billie Burke, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, and Jack Haley. Widely considered one of the greatest movies ever made, it was ranked as the best fantasy film by the American Film Institute in 2008.
The new movie, Wicked: For Good, gives audiences even more connections to the classic story of The Wizard of Oz than the 2024 Wicked film does. While Wicked: For Good takes place at the same time as The Wizard of Oz, it includes brief appearances of Dorothy (though her face is never fully shown). The characters’ struggles to shape the future of Oz happen alongside Dorothy’s arrival and journey through the land.
Currently, The Wizard of Oz is ranked at number 10 among the most popular movies on HBO Max in the United States (as of November 24th). This comes shortly after the release of Wicked: For Good in theaters. Essentially, The Wizard of Oz tells the story of the events in Wicked: For Good, but from Dorothy’s point of view, with a few changes made to fit the Wicked storyline and to account for copyright restrictions.
For generations, people have loved The Wizard of Oz because it’s an optimistic story with memorable acting and innovative filmmaking. It’s particularly known for being one of the first movies to use Technicolor, a new technology that inspired the filmmakers to make the Wicked Witch of the West green and Dorothy’s slippers red – changes they made from the original book to really show off the brilliant colors.
I’m absolutely captivated by Wicked: For Good – it’s smashing all sorts of box office records! And it feels like The Wizard of Oz is entering a really exciting new chapter. I was thrilled to hear Leonardo DiCaprio’s company is making a documentary about the original 1939 film. It just proves to me that Wicked isn’t just a moment – it’s going to keep the magic of Oz alive for years to come, reminding everyone how incredible the story is.
As a movie fan, it’s no surprise The Wizard of Oz keeps popping up in conversations and even hitting the Top 10 on streaming – it’s a classic! It’s one of those films that truly changed cinema, and I think people are revisiting it now to see how it still resonates and what we can learn from its story today.
