Star Wars: Starfighter Director Reveals 1 Mandate Lucasfilm Gave Movie

Shawn Levy, the director of Star Wars: Starfighter, revealed the instructions Lucasfilm gave him while making the film.

What is the one mandate for Star Wars: Starfighter?

When making past Star Wars films, directors often had to follow established storylines and rules to ensure consistency within each trilogy. Director Jon Levy discussed filming Starfighter and the overall experience of creating a Star Wars movie during an interview on The Business podcast with Kim Masters.

Levy joined the franchise with a very unusual opportunity – Lucasfilm only asked him to bring something completely new and original to the project.

Levy explained that the only guidance he receives is consistent encouragement to create something fresh and original. Whenever he suggests revisiting a character from a previous film, the response is always to prioritize new ideas and avoid repeating what audiences have already seen. He emphasized, ‘That’s the truth.’

Star Wars: Starfighter features original characters and concepts developed by director Michael Levy and writer Jonathan Tropper. Levy noted that he had more creative freedom with this project than he’d experienced on previous films.

Levy explained that he’s had a lot of creative freedom working on this new film, comparable to what he experienced with movies like ‘Free Guy’ and ‘The Adam Project,’ which weren’t based on existing stories. He described the experience as ‘very, very liberating’ so far.

Ryan Gosling leads the cast of the new Star Wars film, Starfighter, as a protector of a young boy played by Flynn Gray. The film also features Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.

Star Wars: Starfighter takes place five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker (2019). The story comes from an original concept developed by creators Levy and Tropper, and production is currently happening.

Star Wars: Starfighter is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 28, 2027.
