Udo Kier, a celebrated actor famous for his roles in horror films like Dracula 3000, Armageddon, Blade, and My Own Private Idaho, has passed away at the age of 81. His partner, Delbert McBride, confirmed that Kier died in California.

German actor Klaus Kinski, known for his work in horror films, passed away Sunday morning in Palm Springs. While the cause of death hasn’t been disclosed, Kinski became a prominent figure in the genre during the 1970s with roles in films like Flesh for Frankenstein, Blood for Dracula, and Suspiria. Though not a mainstream star, he was a recognizable face and a favorite among fans of cult horror movies.

Toward the end of his career, Kier acted in several well-known films, including Rob Zombie’s Halloween, Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac, and Alexander Payne’s Downsizing. He also made appearances in music videos for artists like Madonna (“Erotica”), Korn (“Make Me Bad”), and RMB (“Deep Down Below”). In addition to his on-screen work, Kier was a highly active voice actor, lending his talents to projects in both German and English.

The celebrated German actor, who was 81 years old, appeared in hundreds of films and collaborated with renowned directors such as Gus Van Sant, Werner Herzog, and Dario Argento. He was a familiar face in horror films, and even when starring in obscure projects, he lent them an air of respectability. He had a remarkable range, appearing in both critically disliked movies like BloodRayne and Feardotcom, as well as highly praised films like Dancer in the Dark and Melancholia.

Kier remained incredibly active throughout his career, appearing in over a dozen films even in his late 70s between 2017 and 2019. His final on-screen role was in the international film The Secret Agent, alongside Wagner Moura, though it received a limited release. He was also set to voice a character in the horror video game OD, co-created with Jordan Peele. Following the news of his passing, Kojima shared on X that Kier unfortunately didn’t get to finish his work on the game.

“I’m at a loss for words. It all happened far too suddenly.

The strike really threw a wrench into our plans for ‘OD,’ and we had to postpone filming until next year. Even during the downtime, Udo and I kept emailing back and forth – we stayed really connected. When I finally saw him in Milan in late September, he was so enthusiastic about getting back to work next year. He still had that amazing energy and sense of humor, cracking jokes and being his wonderfully unique self. It was great to see him so positive.

I still can’t believe this.

Udo wasn’t just a performer; he was a true icon of his generation. It’s incredibly sad to lose someone so iconic, and I really believe there will never be another talent quite like his.

Udo, rest in peace. I will never forget you.
