With the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash just weeks away, director James Cameron is suggesting audiences will be surprised by the villains featured in the film.
Honestly, this year at the movies has been kinda…meh. Superhero films haven’t been doing as well as expected, but thankfully, movies aimed at families – like the new Lilo & Stitch and The Minecraft Movie – have been saving the day at the box office.
Business improved significantly this past weekend, largely due to the huge success of Wicked, which earned $226 million globally. Now, all eyes are on Zootopia 2, expected to be the next big hit.
December will see the release of the third Avatar film, continuing the story of two incredibly successful movies, and potentially offering some unexpected twists for fans.
James Cameron hints at new villains in Avatar: Fire and Ash
Stephen Lang brilliantly played the villain in the first two Avatar films, Miles Quaritch, who was a compelling and realistically flawed character.
The character returns in Fire and Ash, where the antagonists are the ‘Fire People’—a tribe living inside a volcano—and their leader, Varang, played by Oona Chaplin. James Cameron has described Varang as someone willing to do terrible things to safeguard her community.
In a recent interview, he hinted that the Varang tribe may not be the only group causing trouble.
Cameron describes the ‘Wind Traders’ in the new movie as exciting and captivating, comparing them to a traveling circus. He says they have a cool, adventurous vibe that makes you want to join them and see the world.
Because the characters travel frequently across the planet, they’re often targeted by attackers. Plus, the Ash People aren’t the only ones who disagree with the N’avi’s way of life, or who are disrupting the natural order. We’ve included these conflicts to make the story more intricate.
