2025 has been a fantastic year for Stephen King enthusiasts, and it’s about to get even better on December 16th. So far this year, four movies based on his stories have already been released: The Monkey, The Life of Chuck, The Long Walk, and The Running Man. Plus, a new adaptation of one of his most popular books has premiered on television.
The highly anticipated horror series Welcome to Derry debuted on HBO right before Halloween. It’s a prequel to the It movies directed by Andy and Barbara Muschietti, which were based on Stephen King’s 1986 novel. While the first season of Welcome to Derry runs until December 14th, fans of Stephen King won’t have to wait long – just two days later – for another captivating series to enjoy.
Both Seasons Of Castle Rock Are Coming To Netflix On December 16
In December 2025, Netflix will add the Stephen King-inspired series Castle Rock to its library. Originally an exclusive on Hulu, the show is set in the fictional Maine town of Castle Rock and ran for two seasons. All 20 episodes will be available on Netflix starting December 16, 2025, after being unavailable for about six years.
Although Castle Rock aired for two seasons between the summer of 2018 and late 2019, it wasn’t actually cancelled. The show was designed as an anthology series, meaning each season featured a completely new story set in the town of Castle Rock. However, the creators only intended to make two seasons. Before landing on Netflix, you could find Castle Rock streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
Why Castle Rock Is The Perfect Show For Stephen King Fans
The TV series Castle Rock was a hit with critics, earning an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and boasted a talented cast. You might recognize stars like Melanie Lynskey, André Holland, Bill Skarsgård, Lizzy Caplan, Jane Levy, Sissy Spacek, and Tim Robbins. Several of these actors are well-known to fans of Stephen King – Skarsgård recently played Pennywise, Robbins starred in The Shawshank Redemption, and Spacek famously played Carrie in the 1976 film Carrie.
Beyond bringing together actors familiar with Stephen King’s work, the show Castle Rock weaves together elements from many of his most famous stories. The town of Castle Rock itself is a significant location in several of King’s novels, including Cujo and Lisey’s Story, and is referenced in many others.
The first season of Castle Rock weaves together a mystery connected to a prisoner from Shawshank and introduces Jackie Torrance, a relative of Jack Torrance from The Shining. The show’s second season centers around Annie Wilkes, a key character in Stephen King’s Misery. Season two acts as a backstory, starring Lizzy Caplan as a younger Annie Wilkes – a role famously played by Kathy Bates in the 1990 film adaptation.
Whether you didn’t get a chance to watch it when it was originally on Hulu, or you’re in the mood for a Stephen King revisit, don’t miss Castle Rock when it comes to Netflix on December 16th.
