The 2010s were surprisingly a golden age for comedy films. That decade saw a lot of truly funny and original movies, many of which were both popular with audiences and praised by critics.
The 2010s were full of great comedy movies, and it’s hard to pick just one as the best. Some years had comedies that were recognized with awards, while others gave us films packed with memorable quotes and laugh-out-loud moments. No matter what, these were all comedies that audiences really enjoyed.
2010: Easy A
The early 2010s were a great time for comedy movies. Films like Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Megamind, and The Other Guys are still popular today. While movies like Adam Sandler’s Grown Ups, the Oscar-winning Beginners, and Date Night also came out, the best comedy of the decade was a teen romantic comedy.
After gaining attention in films like Superbad and Zombieland, Emma Stone landed a leading role in Easy A. The movie is a modern take on The Scarlet Letter, and follows Olive, a high schooler who cleverly uses rumors about herself to become more popular.
Emma Stone is genuinely funny throughout the entire movie, from the well-known “Pocketful of Sunshine” scene to all of her witty responses. The movie also features a fantastic supporting cast, with standout comedic performances from Stanley Tucci, Amanda Bynes, and Patricia Clarkson.
2011: Bridesmaids
2011 was a great year for comedy! The revival of The Muppets was a huge success, 50/50 was both funny and touching, and The Artist even won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Plus, Crazy, Stupid, Love offered a surprising plot twist and a really funny cast.
It’s difficult to name a funnier movie than Bridesmaids. The film was groundbreaking in showing that comedies starring women could be just as hilariously crude as any other, all while being smartly written and offering a heartwarming story about the bonds of friendship.
This hilarious film follows the chaotic and funny misadventures of a group of bridesmaids leading up to a wedding. From embarrassing moments while shopping for a dress to the craziness during air travel, Bridesmaids is a truly funny movie. Melissa McCarthy’s performance was so good, she even received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
2012: 21 Jump Street
Man, 2012 was a really good year for comedies! I loved Pitch Perfect – it was just a blast. And Moonrise Kingdom? That’s Wes Anderson doing what he does best, totally unique. Ted was pure, classic Seth MacFarlane – hilarious. There were some other great movies that year too, like Silver Linings Playbook and Seven Psychopaths, but they weren’t strictly comedies – they definitely mixed in other genres.
If you’re looking for a hilarious movie, 21 Jump Street delivers. It’s actually funnier than the original TV show thanks to the fantastic chemistry between Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube, and the rest of the cast.
The movie fully embraces how silly the idea of cops pretending to be high school students is, and it’s hilarious. From the main characters accidentally getting high to Jonah Hill’s unexpectedly funny poetry performance, the film is packed with non-stop comedy.
2013: The Wolf Of Wall Street
2013 gave us the sequel to Anchorman and the final movie in the Three Cornettos Trilogy. While both were enjoyable, they didn’t quite reach the same level as the first films. We’re the Millers and This is the End were also strong contenders for our top pick.
The Wolf of Wall Street is a brilliantly funny film. While it blends different genres and is another excellent collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, what really makes it stand out is how incredibly entertaining it is.
Leonardo DiCaprio is at his comedic best, and Jonah Hill gives what many are calling the performance of his career. The movie embraces the outrageous details of Jordan Belfort’s life, resulting in a hilarious comedy. The now-famous scene involving Quaaludes is a masterclass in physical comedy – truly unforgettable.
2014: What We Do In The Shadows
As a total movie buff, I always look back on 2014 with a smile. It was a fantastic year for laughs, especially with Birdman surprisingly taking home the Best Picture award! But it wasn’t just Birdman; films like Neighbors, The LEGO Movie, 22 Jump Street, and The Grand Budapest Hotel were all seriously funny and really stood out that year.
Ultimately, the best movie in this genre from 2014 is What We Do in the Shadows. It’s a funny, documentary-style film about a group of vampires sharing a house in Wellington, New Zealand, and it later became the basis for a popular TV series.
I’m a huge fan of What We Do in the Shadows! It’s brilliant – created by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, who are also in it as vampires. The show’s mockumentary format is perfect, and they really lean into classic vampire stories. Plus, the episode with the werewolf is absolutely hilarious – a total standout!
2015: Pitch Perfect 2
This year offered a great mix of movies: The Big Short managed to be funny while tackling a complex issue, The Lobster was a delightfully strange comedy, The Intern was genuinely touching, and Tangerine stood out as a particularly strong independent film. Plus, you had fun comedies like Spy, The Night Before, Trainwreck, and Sleeping with Other People all released in the same year.
The best movie of the year is Pitch Perfect 2, a hilarious follow-up to the popular 2012 film. The original told the story of a college a cappella group, and the sequel takes their adventures to the next level with bigger challenges, celebrity appearances, and even more laughs.
Elizabeth Banks proves herself as a capable director, and Hailee Steinfeld shines in her role. The movie also features unexpectedly funny cameos from Snoop Dogg, the Green Bay Packers, and Pentatonix. Overall, Pitch Perfect 2 is just as enjoyable as the first film and was one of the best movies of 2015.
2016: The Nice Guys
In 2016, Deadpool was the year’s biggest live-action comedy success, and Finding Nemo topped the charts for animated comedies. The year also saw some fantastic, but often overlooked, films like Hunt for the Wilderpeople, The Edge of Seventeen, and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.
Let me tell you, The Nice Guys is easily one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in years. It’s a genuinely hilarious and clever film centered around a mismatched pair – a private eye and a tough guy – who team up to solve the mystery of a missing teenager. It really delivers!
At its heart, the movie is a compelling mystery, but it’s the humor that truly makes it stand out. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe share fantastic chemistry as a duo, and Angourie Rice is particularly funny in one of her first roles. The script, written by Shane Black, is also incredibly witty and well-crafted.
2017: Lady Bird
2017 had some excellent comedies, including the huge hit Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the heartwarming Paddington 2, and the Oscar-nominated I, Tonya. The Disaster Artist is also a great watch, and The LEGO Batman Movie is considered one of the best films ever made about Batman.
However, Lady Bird is a truly exceptional comedy – it would likely be the best of the year in many other years. Written and directed by Greta Gerwig, the film is a coming-of-age story that centers on Lady Bird and the often-difficult relationship she has with her mother as she prepares to go to college.
The movie Lady Bird received widespread critical acclaim, boasting a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earning nominations for five Academy Awards. It also won two Golden Globes, including the award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The film stars Saoirse Ronan, alongside a talented cast featuring Timothée Chalamet and Beanie Feldstein.
2018: Crazy Rich Asians
In 2018, comedy fans enjoyed a lot of surprising and original movies. Films like The Favourite and Sorry to Bother You kept audiences guessing, while Eighth Grade received critical acclaim. For lighter fare, Tag and Blockers were hugely entertaining, and Set It Up offered a charmingly nostalgic romantic comedy experience.
The romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians is number one on the list. The film, which is based on a popular novel, tells the story of Rachel, an economics professor, who discovers her boyfriend is incredibly rich when she travels with him to Singapore.
While the movie is full of hilarious moments, it’s the incredible cast that truly makes Crazy Rich Asians special. Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Gemma Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Ken Jeong, and Awkwafina all give outstanding performances, solidifying its place as a classic romantic comedy.
2019: Booksmart
2019 was a fantastic year for comedies! We saw hilarious films like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit, and the fun sequel Zombieland: Double Tap. Romantic comedy fans enjoyed Always Be My Maybe, and other highlights included My Name is Dolemite and Someone Great.
The comedy Booksmart is widely considered the best of 2019, and a standout film of the entire decade. Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein deliver incredible performances as the main characters, and the film features a wonderfully talented supporting cast including Lisa Kudrow, Jessica Williams, and Billie Lourd.
This movie follows two friends who decide to let loose and have one last night of fun before starting college. However, their plans quickly fall apart, leading to a series of chaotic and surprisingly relatable misadventures. The film is beautifully made, with a particularly striking scene where the characters are presented as dolls.
