Thirty years after Michael Mann’s Heat – widely considered one of the best crime movies ever set in Los Angeles – a sequel is starting to come together. Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale are expected to star, and reports suggest at least seven other major actors are being considered for important roles.
Inspired by the novel Heat 2 by Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner, this story expands on the classic 1995 bank heist film by showing what happened before and after the original movie. The first part will delve into the early lives of thief Neil McCauley and detective Vincent Hanna in 1988, while the second part follows their continuing conflict through the year 2000. Now, with a potential film adaptation starring Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio, casting is underway to find actors for the supporting characters and determine their roles.
What Is Michael Mann’s ‘Heat 2’ About?

Warner Bros.
Inspired by Michael Mann’s first novel, co-authored with Meg Gardiner, Heat 2 promises a large-scale crime story that takes place across the globe, not just in Los Angeles. The book jumps around in time, starting in Chicago in 1988. We see detective Vincent Hanna (played by Al Pacino in the original Heat) pursuing Otis Wardell, the unpredictable leader of a violent home-invasion crew. After a raid to catch Otis fails, Hanna focuses on tracking down Otis’s supplier, Aaron, only to discover he’s been brutally murdered.
Meanwhile, career heist man Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro in Heat) is also in Chicago, robbing several safety deposit boxes with his accomplices Chris Shiherlis (played by Val Kilmer) and Michael Cerrito (Tom Sizemore). Neil’s crew also gets supplies from Aaron, and when he is found dead, Neil flees to Los Angeles to get his girlfriend, Elisa, and their daughter, Gabriela, before going to Mexicali to rob a stash house. However, Otis has already tortured Aaron for information regarding Neil’s whereabouts and has begun stalking Neil, Chris, and Michael.
Once the story overlaps with the 1995 timeline featured in Heat, the story jumps ahead to 2000, when Hanna continues to pursue Otis for brutal homicides with ties to the David Liu crime family. The Lius include Ana and Felix, who oppose rival gang member Claudio Chen. As Hanna and his new partner Casals pursue Otis and the Lius, Chris’ wife Charlene and their son Dominick also play a factor in how the crime saga concludes. Now that the main characters are established, it’s time to decipher who will play who in Heat 2.
Leonardo DiCaprio & Christian Bale Will Reportedly Star in ‘Heat 2’

Michael Mann is hoping to reunite with Christian Bale and, for the first time, work with Leonardo DiCaprio on the upcoming film Heat 2. Bale previously starred in Mann’s Public Enemies as FBI agent Melvin Purvis, opposite Johnny Depp’s portrayal of John Dillinger.
While it’s still unknown which roles Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio will play, the film’s timeline – spanning both the past and future – means the actors could portray the same character at different ages. Most speculation points to DiCaprio playing an older version of Chris Shiherlis, a role memorably played by Val Kilmer in the original 1995 film.
Regarding Christian Bale’s role, the most likely scenario is that he’ll play a younger version of either Vincent Hanna or Neil McCauley, the film’s two central characters. However, because Bale previously played a sympathetic role in Public Enemies, it would be unexpected if he took on the ‘good guy’ role of Hanna again for director Michael Mann. Currently, Bale is the same age Robert De Niro was when he originally played McCauley. Given that Heat 2 tells a story that jumps between the past and the present, it’s unlikely Bale will portray McCauley at any age.
So, could Christian Bale take on a role similar to Al Pacino’s in Heat? Pacino was 55 when he played detective Vincent Hanna, and at 52, Bale could realistically portray a younger version of the character in a prequel set in 1988. However, this is just speculation at this point – nothing has been confirmed.
Let’s talk casting for the film adaptation. The character of Otis Wardell is absolutely central to the story, appearing across all timelines, and I have to say, Christian Bale feels like a perfect fit. He’s brilliant at portraying truly disturbed characters – think of his work in American Psycho – and I can easily envision him nailing the unsettling intensity of Otis. That said, it’s all just wishful thinking until we get official confirmation, so we’ll have to wait and see.
Al Pacino Is Rumored To Play a Role in ‘Heat 2’

Warner Bros.
Al Pacino is the only actor from the original Heat who is being considered for a role in Heat 2. He famously played LAPD detective Vincent Hanna. In the first film, Pacino and Robert De Niro delivered an iconic scene – a tense diner conversation where their characters, Hanna and McCauley, debated their very different approaches to life and the law.
If Al Pacino appears in Heat 2, it would make sense for him to play Detective Hanna again. However, a lot of time has passed since the first movie, and the sequel is set only a few years later. It might be hard for audiences to accept that Hanna could age thirty years in just five years, considering the original film’s timeline.
Considering how quickly AI and de-aging technologies are advancing, it’s very possible Al Pacino could reprise his role as Hanna in a future installment. Plus, given how memorable his performance was in the original film, it would be surprising to see him play a different character in a sequel.
Austin Butler Is Rumored for a ‘Heat 2’ Role

Sony Pictures Releasing
Austin Butler, recently seen in Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing, is reportedly being considered for a significant role in Heat 2. Although not officially confirmed, many fans speculate he’ll portray a younger version of Chris Shiherlis due to his appearance. If this is true, and Leonardo DiCaprio plays the older Chris Shiherlis, the role would be split between two acclaimed actors showing the character at different ages. If Butler isn’t cast as young Chris, he might be considered for the roles of Otis or Aaron.
Ana de Armas Could Possibly Play Ana in ‘Heat 2’

Lionsgate
So far, Ana de Armas, known for her roles in movies like Knives Out and Ballerina, is the only actress being considered for a major part in Heat 2. Given that the character of Elisa doesn’t survive long in the story, it’s likely de Armas will play Ana, a smart and important member of the Liu crime family. The plot involves a relationship between Chris and Ana, which leads them into the dangerous world of the dark web. De Armas is a strong fit for the role because Ana remains a key character throughout the years covered in the film – from 1995 to 2000.
Adam Driver Likely To Play Young Neil McCauley in ‘Heat 2’

Lionsgate
Adam Driver, known for his roles in films like Marriage Story and Logan Lucky, is a strong contender to play a younger version of Neil McCauley in Heat 2. He recently starred in Michael Mann’s Ferrari, which increases the likelihood of him taking on another significant part in Heat 2. At 42, Driver’s age aligns with the character’s age during the 1988 scenes, mirroring Robert De Niro’s age of 52 in the original Heat, which was set in 1995.
If Adam Driver isn’t cast as McCauley, he could potentially play a younger version of Michael Cerrito. He’s already shown he can portray Italian-American characters, as seen in films like House of Gucci and Ferrari. There’s also a chance he could be considered for the roles of the main villain, Otis Wardell, or the criminal character, Felix.
Bradley Cooper Is Rumored for a ‘Heat 2’ Role

Warner Bros. Pictures
Bradley Cooper, known for films like American Sniper and A Star is Born, is potentially involved in Heat 2. Although it’s not official, reports suggest he might step in as a replacement for Leonardo DiCaprio if DiCaprio doesn’t play the role of Chris Shiherlis. Considering Cooper’s build, he’s unlikely to portray younger versions of Neil McCauley or Vincent Hanna. If he isn’t cast as Chris, he could instead play Aaron, the main character Otis Wardell, or Felix, a member of the Liu crime family.
Channing Tatum & Jeremy Allen White Are Also Circling ‘Heat 2’ Roles

Channing Tatum (known for films like Roofman and Blink Twice) and Jeremy Allen White (The Bear, Shameless) are the latest actors reportedly being considered for roles in Heat 2. It’s currently unclear which characters they might play, but Tatum could potentially be cast as a younger version of McCauley, Hanna, Cerrito, or Wardell. Another possibility is that he’ll play Felix, a criminal associated with Ana and the Liu crime family.
The same holds true for actor Jason White. While he probably won’t be cast in a leading role alongside stars like Bale or DiCaprio, he’s perfectly suited to play Aaron, a key supporting character who kicks off the story in 1988. It’s unlikely that either Tatum or White will be considered for the roles of characters who are not white, such as David Liu, Claudio Chen, or Hanna’s partner, Casals.
