Zack Snyder’s ‘Twilight of the Gods’ Canceled at Netflix After One Season

Zack Snyder has several ambitious projects planned with Netflix, but it appears one of them has been cancelled. While Snyder’s films for the streamer, like the ‘Army of the Dead’ series and ‘Rebel Moon’, have received mixed reactions, his animated series ‘Twilight of the Gods‘ won’t be returning for a second season.

Look, I get that Zack Snyder has a really devoted fanbase – they’re incredible! – and they’re always going to champion his vision. But honestly, for me and a lot of other movie lovers, his films just don’t consistently deliver on the promise of his reputation. I recently checked out Twilight of the Gods, his animated series based on Norse mythology, and it’s a pretty wild ride. It follows a king and a shield-maiden who get caught up in a war with gods who are losing their power, and their journey basically throws their whole world into chaos and towards what seems like a really bleak future.

It’s been a bit of a bummer lately seeing some shows quietly disappear from Netflix. I was surprised to hear they’ve canceled both ‘Exploding Kittens,’ based on the card game, and the reboot of ‘Good Times’ – that one had a really funny voice cast with J.B. Smoove, Marsai Martin, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Jay Pharoah. But it’s not all bad news for animation fans, thankfully. Netflix is still putting a lot of money into animated projects. We’re getting a new show from Ricky Gervais called ‘Alley Cats,’ and they’ve also got ‘Ghostbusters,’ ‘Stranger Things: Tales from ’85,’ and an animated ‘Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft’ in the works, so there’s still plenty to look forward to!

What Went Wrong for Zack Snyder?

After leaving the DC Extended Universe due to a personal tragedy, Zack Snyder hasn’t quite regained his footing. While he pleased fans with the release of his director’s cut of Justice League, his subsequent films made for Netflix, despite being big-budget productions, haven’t performed as well as the streaming service hoped.

Both Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon started with high hopes, but Netflix hasn’t announced any progress on continuing either series. Although Zack Snyder has said he has many more stories planned for the Army of the Dead universe, it’s becoming increasingly unlikely he’ll get to tell them.

Zack Snyder is also reportedly working on a crime thriller set in the LAPD. Last May, the script was nearing completion – estimated to be finished within a month, according to co-writer Kurt Joahnstad. However, there haven’t been any updates on the project in almost six months.

The interview also shared encouraging news about Zack Snyder’s UFC movie, Brawler. The script is finished, and Snyder is now focused on casting athletes who can convincingly portray professional fighters. While the search is underway, there haven’t been any new announcements about the casting process.

Zack Snyder has always been a director people either love or hate, and his latest projects haven’t changed that. He’s been posting behind-the-scenes photos from his films, including his work on the DC Universe movies, on Instagram. This has reignited calls from fans for his original vision to be fully realized – they’re hoping someone like Netflix will buy Warner Bros. and bring it to life. It’s a long shot, but fans are still dreaming it could happen.
