If you’re a fan of How I Met Your Mother, now’s the time to watch it again! The show, created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays, is leaving its current streaming service this December. This popular sitcom, which originally aired from 2005 to 2014, is considered one of the best of the 21st century, despite some debate over how it ended. For nine seasons, viewers followed Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) as he recounted the long and winding story of how he met the mother of his children. When the show ended, many fans immediately revisited the series with their DVD collections. Now, with streaming becoming more common, it’s easier than ever to re-watch… but unfortunately, the show is being removed from its current streaming platform.
You can currently watch How I Met Your Mother on Netflix, but that won’t last long! The show is leaving Netflix on December 3rd. Luckily, all nine seasons are still available to stream on Hulu with a Disney+ subscription.
As a total film and TV buff, I remember when How I Met Your Mother first came out in 2005. The show started with Ted Mosby telling his kids the ridiculously long story of how he met their mother. It really revolved around him and his core group of friends – the hilariously inappropriate Barney, sweet Marshall, Marshall’s girlfriend (and later wife) Lily, and the cool, independent Robin. Honestly, if you ever complained about the length of movies like Avatar or the extended Lord of the Rings editions, Ted’s story would make those feel like short films! For nine seasons, his kids were subjected to every detail of his journey to find ‘the one.’
‘How I Met Your Mother’s Doomed Spin-Off

Hulu
During the 2000s, How I Met Your Mother was a hugely popular sitcom, just like The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men. Many successful sitcoms get spin-offs, and The Big Bang Theory found success with Young Sheldon, which then led to George and Mandy’s First Marriage. Unfortunately, How I Met Your Mother hasn’t had the same luck with spin-off shows.
In 2022, a sequel series, How I Met Your Father, brought viewers back to the world of How I Met Your Mother. Starring Hilary Duff and narrated by Kim Cattrall, the show followed Sophie as she recounted the long story of how she met her future spouse, just like Ted did in the original. However, unlike Ted’s nine-season tale, Sophie’s story only lasted two seasons before Hulu cancelled the show. Several factors contributed to the cancellation. Primarily, How I Met Your Father didn’t attract as many viewers as How I Met Your Mother. Additionally, Disney’s stock was declining around the time of the second season, leading the company to cut costs and cancel shows that were either expensive or not performing well.
