Nightwing’s Newest Enemy is the Perfect Replacement for Stephen King’s Pennywise

Nightwing is facing a new enemy who is showing just how dangerous they are, and this villain could be the most frightening clown character ever created in the DC Universe.

Following a months-long, covert battle against Spheric Solutions and the Cirque du Sin, the latest issue of Nightwing (#132, by Dan Watters, Dexter Soy, Veronica Gandini, and Wes Abbott) brings Dick Grayson face-to-face with his newest enemy. Surprisingly, the real threat isn’t Olivia Pearce, but the terrifying clown called Zanni, who has been manipulating her body and possesses powers beyond anything Nightwing could imagine.

The Zanni first appeared briefly in Nightwing #119 (2024), written by Dan Watters and illustrated by Dexter Soy. This mysterious figure, depicted in black and white and based on traditional French clowns, is secretly the leader of both the Cirque du Sin and Spheric Solutions. Adding to the complexity, the Zanni has a hidden connection to Dick Grayson’s history, going all the way back to when Dick was Robin.

Zanni immediately stood out as a potential problem when she first appeared. Initially, though, she presented herself as Olivia Pearce, the driven and technologically skilled CEO of Spheric Solutions. Her company had come to Bludhaven hoping to establish a new headquarters and, crucially, to test their weaponized drones against the city’s gangs, which were becoming more active after Heartless was defeated.

Instead of genuinely trying to assist, Spheric Solutions was solely focused on manipulating Nightwing and ultimately causing his downfall. They actively lured him into dangerous situations with the young people he was trying to protect, and then forced him to participate in their deception while Olivia systematically sabotaged his life. Now, the Cirque du Sin has driven Nightwing to risk everything he’s worked for, all without him understanding the true danger he faces.

Nightwing #132 is on sale now from DC Comics.
