Please be aware that this article reveals major plot points from season 3 of Tulsa King. So far, season 3 of Taylor Sheridan’s Tulsa King has been well-received. The show is really hitting its stride with the cast delivering strong performances, and the conflict between Dwight and Jeremiah Dunmire is captivating. Plus, both a fourth season of Tulsa King and a spin-off series called NOLA King are already in the works.
Despite the continued success of Tulsa King season 3, a growing issue is becoming clear: the show’s episodes are too long. This has been a problem since the beginning, but it’s particularly noticeable—and problematic—in the current season. This is especially frustrating because Tulsa King had recently overcome a common challenge faced by many streaming series.
Tulsa King Solved The Streaming Problem Of Having Delays Between Seasons

Tulsa King stands out in the world of streaming TV. Unlike many shows that have long gaps between seasons, it delivers new episodes relatively quickly. This is often difficult for other series because coordinating busy actors, achieving high production values, and completing extensive visual effects all take considerable time.
Like many streaming shows, Tulsa King experienced a delay between seasons. It took almost two years for season 2 to arrive after the first season premiered in 2022. However, Tulsa King stood out by addressing this issue. Season 3 premiered nearly a year after season 2, and production on season 4 is already happening.
It’s impressive for a streaming series to do what Tulsa King has done. While shows like Severance and Stranger Things often take three years or more to return with new seasons, Tulsa King benefits from releasing seasons more quickly, helping it keep viewers engaged between releases. This fast pace has been a real strength for the show, though it hasn’t fixed the problem with how long each episode is.
Tulsa King Seasons Come Out Faster, But They Have Shorter Episodes
While Tulsa King fixed the issue of long gaps between seasons, it faced a different problem with episode length. Most streaming shows run between 50 minutes and an hour per episode, but some, like Stranger Things, have episodes that are almost as long as full-length movies. Tulsa King, on the other hand, has significantly shorter episodes than most shows.
Despite being advertised as an hour-long show, most episodes of Tulsa King are actually shorter, averaging less than 40 minutes. While a couple of episodes reached 47 minutes, six were 36 minutes or shorter. This significantly reduces the total story time per season – instead of around 10 hours, a season of Tulsa King is closer to seven hours, even when you include the opening sequence, credits, and recap segments.
| Tulsa King Season 3 Release Schedule | ||
|---|---|---|
| Title | Release Date (Sundays @ Midnight ET) | Runtime (minutes) |
| Blood and Bourbon | September 21 | 47 |
| The Fifty | September 28 | 45 |
| The G and the OG | October 5 | 47 |
| Staring Down the Barrel | October 12 | 39 |
| On the Rocks | October 19 | 43 |
| Bubbles | October 26 | 39 |
| Art of War | November 2 | 39 |
| Nothing is Over | November 9 | 40 |
| Dead Weight | November 16 | 38 |
| Out of Adventure | November 23 | 36 |
It looks like future seasons of Tulsa King might arrive more quickly, but each season will be shorter. Currently, a season consists of only seven episodes stretched out to ten, which isn’t ideal. The show also tries to juggle too many storylines at once, and the brief season length doesn’t give them enough time to develop properly, making the problem even more noticeable.
Take Tulsa King season 3, for instance. It tried to juggle eleven different storylines, but with only seven hours of total runtime, many of them felt rushed and incomplete. The season really needed more time to develop these plots, but the short length of each episode didn’t allow for that. A good example is the conflict between Bodhi and Art, which was simply dropped mid-season to focus on other things.
While I enjoy how quickly new seasons of Tulsa King are released, the short length of each season is hurting the show. Stories feel rushed and don’t develop naturally, and the show generally lacks a clear direction beyond the main plot. It needs more depth and substance.
