A key Marvel hero is set to face more difficult challenges when Thor returns in Avengers: Doomsday. Chris Hemsworth will reprise his role as Thor, and Chris Evans is highly likely to return as Captain America. Interestingly, Robert Downey Jr. will be back as well, but this time as the villain Doctor Doom. While Marvel’s original three heroes are reuniting for Avengers 5, it doesn’t seem Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow will appear. The status of Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye is still uncertain, though Hulk will be featured in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
At a recent Q&A for The Cosmic Circus, reporter Alex Perez shared that Chris Hemsworth’s character, Thor, faces significant challenges in Avengers: Doomsday, and also discussed his upcoming role in a major 2026 film.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has only shown us a small part of Thor’s incredibly long life – just 17 years out of over 1,500. As Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool put it, it feels like audiences are meeting Thor during a difficult time.
Thor has experienced immense loss throughout his life. He’s witnessed the deaths of his mother, Frigga, his best friend, Heimdall, and his brother, Loki (who has died multiple times). He’s also seen his father, Odin, disappear, his sister, Hela, become a villain before perishing, and his love, Jane Foster, tragically lose her battle with cancer. To top it all off, his home world, Asgard, was completely destroyed.
Perez explained that his character’s storyline begins similarly to Thor’s in Avengers: Infinity War, where he teamed up with Rocket and Groot to create the Stormbreaker axe – initially as a secondary plot. However, he emphasized that this time around, the God of Thunder becomes central to the main story much sooner, well before the final act.
The insider noted that Thor often faces high stakes in his films, then playfully asked, “What’s a god to a non-believer?” This line actually comes from a 2012 song, “No Church in the Wild,” by Kanye West and Jay-Z, and features the artist Frank Ocean.
It’s possible Robert Downey Jr. could play Doctor Doom, a Marvel villain who often considers himself divine. In the comics, he once told Reed Richards’ daughter, Valeria, “I was a god, Valeria… I found it, beneath me.”
Thor is expected to play a significant part in the upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release on December 18, 2026. Sources suggest he’ll be the second most important character, after Doctor Doom.
Thor’s Role in Avengers: Doomsday Could Be His Most Tragic Yet

It’s unclear exactly what Thor will do in Avengers: Doomsday, but it’s likely he’ll be determined to redeem himself after failing to stop Thanos. Expect him to fully commit to defeating Doctor Doom right from the start.
Similar to how his story began in Avengers: Infinity War, Thor appears to be embarking on a solo journey before teaming up with other heroes. He might be exploring space with his adopted daughter, Love, and get pulled back to Earth by something happening across different universes.
After everything Thor has been through in the MCU, it’s hard to imagine what challenges could still be left for him in the next Avengers movie. He’s lost nearly everyone he’s ever cared about over the centuries, and it feels like he’s already reached his breaking point.
As a huge Marvel fan, I’m really excited about the possibility of seeing Thor and Loki team up again in Avengers 5! But it’s always a bit worrying when it comes to Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston. He has a knack for… well, not surviving. With the Loki we got to know in his Disney+ series, I can’t help but wonder if his time in the MCU is already running out.
Rumors suggest Loki will be central to the plot of Doomsday, with the Avengers and Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., competing to find him. Loki is said to be the key to controlling the different timelines within the Multiverse.
It appears Doctor Doom is poised to win the upcoming Doomsday event, which will likely lead to a resurgence for the Avengers in Secret Wars – a storyline reminiscent of Thanos’s arc in Infinity War and Endgame. To make this happen, Loki might have to sacrifice himself to allow Doom to complete his plan.
Considering Doctor Doom’s similarity to the late Tony Stark, it’s likely to be particularly difficult for Thor to fight him. Seeing a villain who looks just like Iron Man – someone he fought alongside and respected for so long – will undoubtedly be emotionally challenging for the Asgardian.
Okay, so after seeing Doomsday, things suddenly clicked for me – it totally explains that bizarre scene in Deadpool & Wolverine where Thor was visibly upset watching something on TV! It adds a whole new layer of emotional weight to what’s coming, knowing the context of this film. It’s not just a random moment; it’s a reaction to this – and honestly, it’s pretty heartbreaking when you put it all together.
There’s talk that Marvel Studios is planning a significant, definitive death for Thor in a future Avengers film. If he were to die in battle, it could finally allow him to enter Valhalla, with his hammer falling to the ground as he makes the ultimate sacrifice to defeat Doctor Doom.
