Newly released concept art for the upcoming Superman movie offers a frightening glimpse of one of its villains: a mischievous, interdimensional Imp. While James Gunn’s Superman reboot features several adversaries for David Corenswet’s Superman, this particular Imp didn’t directly battle the hero. Instead, it briefly caused chaos in Metropolis, and Superman surprisingly chose to let the Justice Gang handle the situation. This decision stemmed from a recent revelation: Lex Luthor had revealed the true, controlling message from Superman’s Kryptonian parents, influencing his choice to step back.
During the heartfelt talk between Clark Kent and Lois Lane about Superman’s reason for being on Earth, the Imp stayed mostly out of focus, leaving fans with little chance to get a good look at its appearance. Now, however, official concept art has been released, finally revealing what the creature looks like.

Adam Milan Milicevic of Legacy Effects recently revealed new concept art for Superman on ArtStation, giving fans a glimpse at the unsettling design of the film’s fifth-dimensional Imp.
I was checking out a concept artist’s work online, and they shared the final design for this really cool creature they did for Superman – an inter-dimensional Imp! It was created for Legacy Effects, and apparently, they went through a ton of different versions before landing on the final look. They even jokingly called it a ‘jelly boi’ during the process, which I thought was pretty fun!

Milicevic’s mention of calling the creature “Jelly Boi” suggests the design was inspired by jellyfish. Examining the concept art confirms this, showing the Imp has a jelly-like body with eight hole-like features that resemble eyes.
Superman noticed the Imp was glowing, and it appears this is because the creature is sending out fast, energetic pulses.

Okay, so this Imp creature is seriously creepy-cool. It’s got these tentacles covered in what look like feathers, and they actually glow, which really highlights these pulsing veins you can see inside it. It’s all very unsettling, and honestly, it’s got me wondering… could this be Mister Mxyzptlk in disguise? The movie doesn’t say, leaving you to speculate!
Mister Mxyzptlk is a playful, reality-bending imp from the fifth dimension in DC Comics. He’s famous for using tricks and messing with Superman. A version of this character appeared in the TV series Supergirl, which is part of the Arrowverse.

I’m really excited about the possibility of Mister Mxyzptlk finally showing up in the DCU! While he hasn’t made a proper appearance yet, I realized something interesting – those Imps showed up in the finale of Peacemaker Season 2, during that crazy scene with the ARGUS team and the Quantum Unfolding Chamber. It feels like a hint that Mxyzptlk’s big debut might be coming sooner than we think, and I can’t wait to see it!
James Gunn directs Superman, a film that explores what Clark Kent truly learned from his Kryptonian parents and how that impacts his life. The movie features David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, and Nicholas Hoult in leading roles, and was released in theaters globally on July 11, 2025.
Will the DCU Feature a More Terrifying Imp in the Future?
The Imp is already a creepy creature, but new artwork shows it could have been even more frightening with a stronger emphasis on its disturbing features.
Many viewers felt the movie would have been stronger if Superman had participated more in the battle against the Imp, as it would have given audiences a better look at the enjoyable interactions between Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific.
Future DC Universe stories might reveal a truly frightening version of the fifth-dimensional Imp. Developing this creature fully could be really interesting, letting its unpredictable nature throw the heroes off balance in fights. This would make the Imp a unique and unforgettable villain, solidifying its place among the DCU’s most dangerous creatures.
